I really enjoyed this short story collection, full of strange and wonderful stories. Plenty of fantasy and speculative vibes throughout. Particular favorites included: Selkie Stories are for Losers, Ogres of East Africa, An Account of the Land of Witches, and Fallow.

I though this would be a fun way to break down what I'm reading since I'm almost always reading at least one each of a print book, ebook, and audiobook.

Happy New Year!

1. Tender

2. I started Tender at the end of 2021 but I think the first book I'll actually start this year may be Damnation Spring after seeing some great reviews here on litsy

3. So many, but off the top of my head: Siren Queen by Nghi Vo and Just Like Home by Sarah Gailey

December 8: Reflections by Sofia Samatar. Story published in Then Again

I‘m not sure what I just read, but I‘m intrigued. I think I read about a writer having a writer‘s block. But there was pictures

Well, you know a book has potential when it makes you LOL at the first paragraph.
#currentlyreading Tender, a collection of stories by Sofia Samatar. This has been on my #TBR for a long, long time and I feel like a collection of stories is just what I need this week.

We are so excited to have been asked by @quarterlane to curate one of their fall boxes. We thought long and hard about our picks, and tried to choose a unique selection of authors you may not have read. The box is available for a few more weeks! It‘s not too early to shop for the holidays, so get one while you can!

Best day ever. ❤️

ReadingEnvy Yay glad you were able to go! I couldn't make last night but try to see Jeff during Shared Worlds every year. 7y
kdwinchester @ReadingEnvy What is this Shared Worlds you speak of?! 😱 7y
ReadingEnvy @kdwinchester it's the writing camp for middle school.and high schoolers run by the VanderMeers and others, every July at Wofford. They bring in at least one major fantasy or sci-fi author and usually more... Last year I met Nnedi Okorafor and Thomas Olde Heuvelt! 7y

Samatar's stories give a unique perspective of the world while simultaneously adding a touch of magic that never seems out of place. Two parents fostering a special child not their own, an encyclopedia of ogres, a ghoul that walks among us—all of these stories fit perfectly within Samatar's universe. The collection also plays around with form, including stories based on school reports, reference material, letters, a commentary, and so much more.

Mehso-so

A lot of good stories in this collection, particularly ones where the world of the story seems "normal" then one small twist reveals that it is actually dystopic (ex. "Selkie Stories Are for Lovers", "Honey Bear" and "How to Get Back to be Forest"). These stories cluster in the front half of the book (Tender Bodies) and the collection feels unbalanced. It didn't gel as a collection for me.

(But I can count it for a Read Harder task! ??)

I had never read Sofia Samatar before, but agreed to review her new story collection because I'd heard great things about her work. I wasn't disappointed. She's wildly imaginative and incredibly talented. Her writing is sharp and beautiful, and these stories are strange and wonderful. I'll post the link to my review when it runs!
