Was an interesting little read. Not exactly what I expected, but very interesting and informative. More like a workbook style course in Witchcraft than a history on the topic.

Can‘t believe I did it. Listened to this entire thing “cover to cover.” Phew.

I did find it to be extremely heteronormative, and weirdly critical of female dominance in the craft.

Buckland is fully transparent about the fact that he has made up large portions of these “traditions” so it‘s weird to me when people treat it as a bible.

I enjoyed the brief overview of so many topics though, and the list of active practitioners.

BeansPage I am an eclectic Pagan Priestess (been practicing now for over 20 years). I like Raymond Buckland's early work but like the rest of you I do not understand why this book is considered our bible. It is a great written work to have as reference but nothing more beyond that really. I find Scott Cunningham's books a lot more informative and useful. 7y

BookwormAHN I also love the phrase heathen dirtwitch. My biggest annoyance with the book and him was his disdain and dismissal of solitary witches. He made it sound more like a secret society for only the select and initiated. 😡 7y

BeansPage If you're looking for lighter reading I suggest his The Witch's Shield book. However if you're looking for a little more heavy reading in a series, I would highly suggest the Temple of Witchcraft series. It is very educational, very well written, the exercises are easy to follow, and for me personally it helped me grow a lot in my spirituality and my magick works. 7y

I have mixed feelings about this but my library has the audiobook so here goes!

This basically seems like a smoke and mirrors book and it says as much in the intro but it‘s still interesting in how much it‘s inspired culturally.

We‘ll see how far I can get due to bravado and inaccuracy though.
