As a child, Renne showed promise of becoming one of the world's greatest cellists. Now, years later, his life suddenly is altered by two events: he becomes a juror in a murder trial for the brutal killing of a Buddhist monk, and he takes on as a pupil a Korean boy whose brilliant musicianship reminds him of his own past.

This book was lovely. The musical descriptions mixed with the seriousness of the trial was beautifully written.

I'm really looking forward to reading this one. It isn't one that I would typically pick up. I enjoyed the movie but I just assumed that this would be a really dry read. I'm only a few chapters in, however and I am really enjoying it. I'm also reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas for class so it's been slow going but, I'm looking forward to being able to dedicate more time to this one.

This book wasn‘t bad, it just wasn‘t that good either. It just seemed to me rather disjointed, and I did not care for the main character. Overall, I was bored.

In 1994 I made $15,000. After paying rent - I didn't have much money left over. I subsisted on the food that was left over from work meetings and bought very few books. The Soloist made the cut and I loved it. Those lean years taught me that I could adapt to whatever life threw at me - and that I'll choose books over food because that's what fuels me. I also learned to never let money rule my life. #lyricalapril #bittersweetsymphony

Suet624 Yes. Being a single mom on and off I did much the same thing. Dumpster diving too. (Flowers and books were awesome surprises in those dives.) Thank you for this beautiful reminder of what I find most important. Much love to you ...❤❤ 8y
SaraFair I love that you are always reflecting and remembering your life's lessons. I need to do more of that! 8y
LauraBeth @Cinfhen I'll admit I bought it solely for the cover - so I lucked out 😂 I mean - it has a cat and a cello! 8y
LauraBeth @Hollie 😊😊 on an other tangent/weird note: I had a dream about The Hating Game last night 😂 8y
LauraBeth @Suet624 people will throw away perfectly good and useful things! Single moms deserve sainthood in my opinion. Much love to you back, my friend! 💕 8y
LauraBeth @SaraFair sometimes I think I need to do less of it! But you're kind to say that 💕💕 8y

"As a rule, I try to avoid talking with anyone about the collapse of society. My own view is that apathy is an acceptable, if not admirable, stance because it actively reduces frustration and despair and to that extent makes the world a better place."

I highly suggest this book to any musicians and music teachers out there. A great journey of self-discovery and the power of music.
