Fire and Brimstone
Fire and Brimstone: The North Butte Mining Disaster of 1917 | Michael Punke
6 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
The author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, The Revenant--basis for the award-winning motion picture starring Leonardo DiCaprio--tells the remarkable story of the worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history. The worst hard-rock mining disaster in American history began a half hour before midnight on June 8, 1917, when fire broke out in the North Butte Mining Company's Granite Mountain shaft. Sparked more than two thousand feet below ground, the fire spewed flames, smoke, and poisonous gas through a labyrinth of underground tunnels. Within an hour, more than four hundred men would be locked in a battle to survive. Within three days, one hundred and sixty-four of them would be dead. Fire and Brimstone recounts the remarkable stories of both the men below ground and their families above, focusing on two groups of miners who made the incredible decision to entomb themselves to escape the gas. While the disaster is compelling in its own right, Fire and Brimstone also tells a far broader story striking in its contemporary relevance. Butte, Montana, on the eve of the North Butte disaster, was a volatile jumble of antiwar protest, an abusive corporate master, seething labor unrest, divisive ethnic tension, and radicalism both left and right. It was a powder keg lacking only a spark, and the mine fire would ignite strikes, murder, ethnic and political witch hunts, occupation by federal troops, and ultimately a battle over presidential power.

It took time to read this nonfiction piece because these are my people and this 1917 story continues to be a part of who we are. The author gives the reader no break - think DiCaprio fighting a bear. Beyond miners trapped in fire 1/2 mile below ground, it‘s about copper, corporate greed, world war, unions, immigrants, biased politicians, and the intestinal fortitude of hard working people to live another day.

I turned back to page 14 of my current non-fiction read and it‘s almost to gruesome to post. 1917 was a bad year! So if you read this, just pretend I‘m reading fiction for October.

marleed Documented in this book is advice we born of Butte stock often say and perfect for today - St Patrick‘s Day... Tap ‘er Light. ...It means Be Careful. It originated from tapping dynamite into the walls of mines. 4y

TheKidUpstairs Yikes! Gruesome is right! 4y
marleed @TheKidUpstairs @CarolynM I‘m lucky to have several books going right now because I can only read about 2 chapters of this one before taking a break. It‘s the history of my hometown so I should be prepared, but this book makes it very real. 4y

Just finished this nonfiction account of a mining disaster in Butte Montana in 1917. In addition to learning about one of the worst mining disasters in history it‘s also a fascinating look into the politics of the time. I grew up in Montana and should have paid more attention in history class! Super interesting - highly recommend

marleed I‘m going to read this soon as my Montana book for ReadTheUSA 2020. Butte is my hometown so it‘s kind of a requirement! 4y
My_novel_obsession @marleed I didn‘t spend to much time in Butte - only there when I joined the Air Force. But this book made me want to learn a lot more about Montana history and definitely visit Butte next time I visit MT. Must have been such a unique experience growing up there! 4y
marleed I was raised while the Berkeley Pit was still in operation and the unions were strong. And I was raised on pasties! It was not until I moved away for college that I realized the uniqueness of a mountain mining town. Funny I just posted a pic on Litsy a couple days ago of the memorial for the Spectacular mine while reading (edited) 4y
Tamra Butte is one of our favorite places to visit. 😁 Fascinating, historical, and beautiful in its own way. I need to check this book out, thank you for posting! 4y
