'There sat the dog with eyes as big as mill wheels' Though criticised for their anarchic immorality when first published, Hans Christian Andersen's tales made him an international star, taken to the hearts of children and adults for their beauty, sorrow and strangeness. Included here are 'The Steadfast Tin Soldier' and 'Big Klaus and Little Klaus'. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875). Andersen's Fairy Tales is available in Penguin Classics.

I've always loved the stories if Hans Christian Anderson since I first heard them as a child.

This is a fabulous little collection of his trade mark fairy tales - classic yet morally ambiguous at times.
I reviewed my larger collection of HCA stories last year & there were a few overlaps, but still enjoyable 😊

I've been dipping in and out of this collection of dark fairy tales gifted to me by the lovely @Kalalalatja (it's pre #MugLove Love) I finished the last story today over soup & salad. I'm not sure how I feel about these little fables...not something I would have wanted to read to my kiddies at bedtime ☺️I love that Katja shared some of her Nordic heritage with me💕💕💕

Kalalalatja They definitely are dark. I remember my teachers at school read them to us when we were little, but they aren‘t exactly bedtime stories. 😳 6y
Reviewsbylola Lol Genevieve would probably love them. 🤣🤣 6y
alisiakae Aww...I love original fairy tales in all their dark and creepy glory. Also, your soup looks delicious! 6y

BarbaraBB We read them when we were kids. Definitely as bedtime stories! And the teachers read them to us at school. We loved them! I can‘t imagine a youth without Andersen (and the German brothers Grimm) 😀! @Kalalalatja (edited) 6y
emilyhaldi Ooohhhh the creepiness makes me want to read! 6y
LeahBergen I always loved the super dark fairy tales as a kid. 6y
Cinfhen What's with you people?? What happened to happily ever after @LeahBergen @emilyhaldi @BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja @4thhouseontheleft @Reviewsbylola 🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰🏰 6y
Kalalalatja Haha we did get the happily ever afters too 😄 But as an adult, I am definitely more attrackted to the dark and creepy tales, which might have a connection to having read them as a child. 6y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja @Cinfhen Haha you are so right! my favourite was The Little Matchgirl. Definitely not a happy ending there... ❄️❄️ 6y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraBB not at all! But a lot of the darker stuff went right over my head as a child, I just focused on the pretty parts 😄 I also love The Little Mermaid and The Wild Swans 6y

Now this is what I wanted. Dark, lovely, slightly melancholy fairy tales.
