Is it really so difficult to look up the pronunciation of a word/name, dear #audiobook narrator?

It's not "Chai-Chester"!

?

I'm not tagging the book, because I'm actually enjoying it. This mispronunciation though was like nails on a chalkboard.

Merethebookgal I listened to an audiobook last year where the narrator pronounced “hearth” as “her-th.”Hearths were prominent in the story so it was like nails on the chalkboard every time. They must‘ve gotten a lot of complaints, because in the sequel, the narrator pronounced hearth correctly 😂 1d

julesG @Merethebookgal 🙄🙄🙄 maybe they thought it needed to sound extra fancy. 1d
ImperfectCJ Place names are the worst. I listened to an audiobook set in Massachusetts a while back, and the mispronunciations of town names was 😬 Indie audiobooks I get since those are usually just the author/rights holder and the narrator, and the narrator does all the editing/producing. But with books where there's a whole crew to listen and catch mistakes, it's a little more annoying. Like with copy editing mistakes in publisher vs indie titles. 1d

This was a very good read. It didn‘t have as much suspense as I originally expected. Overall it was an enjoyable read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Today I finished an audio reread of The Tale of Genji. I did not listen nearly as carefully as I read the first time a few years ago, but I found it interesting how some scenes were so familiar from the previous read. It is still a beautifully written but infuriating story.

Four years.

35,064 hours.
2,103,840 minutes.
126,230,400 seconds.

That‘s how long I‘d waited for the new book by my favorite author, Lukas Gerbhardt: Don‘t Tread on Me.

To put it in perspective, I was graduating middle school when I read Lukas‘s last book, A House of Wooden Windows.

This has been on my TBR for a while, so I listened to it today. It‘s a fun origin story for Santa Claus including how he started using a sleigh pulled by reindeer, getting in houses through the chimney, filling stockings, and his immortality, all with with no Christian connections.

This was a very interesting read. Blending mystery with vampire lore was very interesting. I can‘t wait to see what happens in the rest of the series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Something was draped across Dad‘s outstretched arms. A deer? A fawn that was injured? It was sprawled and long legged, something that had been caught in a poacher‘s trap maybe.

I loved all the twin jokes! It was great to see the twins still in college. I can‘t believe they ended up where they did, but I love the beauty of this story. This is probably tied with The Pussy Upstairs for my favourite of the series. I‘m ready for the next book in January.

I‘m really struggling with this one and it is 100% me and not the book. I read The Ravine first, and I am still caught up on the BEAUTIFUL work of scholarship that is, that this just isn‘t hitting for me. To be honest, he‘s doing really intriguing and unique scholarship as well, but the scholarship is not his point (and I‘m really wishing it was). His scholarship literally couldn‘t be done today, so my desire for more info is that much stronger.

GingerAntics If you are into scholarship/scholarly history, read this one FIRST, then 1w
GingerAntics His unique angle that couldn‘t be pulled off today is that he‘s taking Russian documents released after the fall of the iron curtain (that thus have credibility issues) and pairing them with firsthand accounts 50 years on (which have credibility issues of their own). Together, they fix each other‘s credibility issues to tell this story from a unique perspective. Obviously, the KGB/Putin aren‘t exactly welcoming scholars into their boarders ATM. (edited) 1w
GingerAntics No one could write this book now. No one could go on his journey today (for a multitude of reasons), so I want to know all about it. Unfortunately, that‘s not what this book is about. This is almost his travel log (both through Ukraine and his own childhood during WWII in France). That in itself is an interesting story. It‘s just that following The Ravine, I don‘t care about how he became a priest or his travel issues. 1w
