The American Spirit
The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For | David McCullough
15 posts | 14 read | 5 to read
A timely collection of speeches by David McCullough, the most honored historian in the United Stateswinner of two Pulitzer Prizes, two National Book Awards, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many othersthat reminds us of fundamental American principles. Over the course of his distinguished career, David McCullough has spoken before Congress, the White House, colleges and universities, historical societies, and other esteemed institutions. Now, at a time of self-reflection in America following a bitter election campaign that has left the country divided, McCullough has collected some of his most important speeches in a brief volume designed to identify important principles and characteristics that are particularly American. The American Spirit reminds us of core American values to which we all subscribe, regardless of which region we live in, which political party we identify with, or our ethnic background. This is a book about America for all Americans that reminds us who we are and helps to guide us as we find our way forward.

"To me history ought to be a source of pleasure. It isn't just part of our civic responsibility. To me it's an enlargement of the experience of being alive, just the way literature or art or music is."

– David McCullough

David McCullough had the unique talent of bringing history to life. Even when the subject was a raging flood or a famous bridge, the book read like your favorite fiction story. ?

Bigcountry15 His meticulous research allowed him to build a real connection between the reader and the historical figures in these books. He showed us the heroism of Americans and the possibility of what we can accomplish through ingenuity, bravery, persistence, and faith. Thank you, Mr. McCullough. 2y

“Read books. Try to understand the reason why things happen, why they are as they are.” Quoted from the tagged book. RIP David McCullough.

(Admittedly, about four books from this stack still TBR)

Ruthiella Four out of eleven is pretty good! I 2y
DivineDiana Agree with @Ruthiella! I only have one on the shelves, and I plan to prioritize it now. Love that quote! ❤️ 2y
Suet624 Wow! 2y
BkClubCare I have only read Truman but it looks to be the heftiest! Have you read any Candice Millard? She wrote a lovely tribute to McCullough at his passing. 2y

This is not the book I thought it was going to be, David McCullough delivering speeches made by great Americans illustrating the values that we aspire to as we are going through a time where so much of who we are is being questioned. It is only 1/2 that book. It‘s not a book of speeches by great Americans, but of speeches made by David McCullough. It reaffirms our values. However, It‘s more of a homage to his own thoughts.

Some were better than others but his emphasis on reading, learning history, and being an active citizen were wonderful.

Some red, white and blue books shown here — happy 243rd birthday, America 🇺🇸!

tagged book was a Christmas gift from my youngest. I guess I didn‘t review it then, but I give it a pick — it‘s a collection of some of David McCullough ‘s speeches.

Posted by the #indie bookstore Union Avenue Books here in Knoxville: "Here's a few of the books in our window display. We are calling it "Please go home, you fascist creeps." Everyone be safe in Fort Sanders today."

tpixie To be fair, they need to put up an Anti-Antifa stack, too. Both sides should go home and let us reasonable people live and spread Goodness! 7y
