Independent-minded Sibylla Spencer feels trapped in nineteenth-century London, where her strong will and progressive views have rendered her unmarriageable. Still single at twenty-three, she is treated like a child and feels stifled in her controlling father's house. When Benjamin Hopkins, an ambitious employee of her father's trading company, shows an interest in her, she realizes marriage is her only chance to escape. As Benjamin's rising career whisks them both away to exotic Morocco, Sibylla is at last a citizen of the world, reveling in her newfound freedom by striking her first business deals, befriending locals...and falling in love for the first time with a charismatic and handsome Frenchman. But Benjamin's lust for money and influence draws him into dark dealings, pulling him ever further from Sibylla and their two young sons. When he's arrested on horrible charges, the fate of Sibylla's family rests on her shoulders, as she must decide whether she'll leave him to his fate or help him fight for his life.

Pickpick

If it wasn‘t for #FoodAndLit I probably would not have picked this up. It was fine, and I did learn a bit about #Morocco but as far as great writing or original plot this book was more average to basic. It‘s a bit of romance and some HF too. Set in the mid 1800‘s the book did offer a unique perspective of the different religions and peoples who called Morocco home. I‘m not sorry I read this book, although narration was a little trite.

Daisey Thanks for the tag. This seems to match with other reviews I‘ve read. I‘m probably not going to get to it anytime soon, but I‘ll keep it in mind when I want another Morocco read for some other challenge. 3y
Texreader @Cinfhen @Daisey I read it a few years ago. I gave it a so-so rating. So yea, a good read for #foodandlit or another challenge but otherwise probably much better reads on your tbr list 3y
Daisey @Texreader I appreciate hearing you felt much the same. That definitely lets me just keep it on the list for future challenges. 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Texreader Malala is a good story, but I wasn't too sold on the writing style itself. Still, she is a brave woman! 6y
WarpedSweetness @Texreader Good to know you liked it! @BarbaraTheBibliophage It sounded so good I had to snatch it up. I meant to read it a while ago, but things kept getting in the way. Lol 6y

My kindle first pick for the month. I was torn between this and The Hundredth Queen, but this has been on my tbr list since January, and I love books about Morocco, so I chose it.
