Falling Man
Falling Man: A Novel | Don DeLillo
There is September 11 and then there are the days after, and finally the years. Falling Man is a magnificent, essential novel about the event that defines turn-of-the-century America. It begins in the smoke and ash of the burning towers and tracks the aftermath of this global tremor in the intimate lives of a few people. First there is Keith, walking out of the rubble into a life that he'd always imagined belonged to everyone but him. Then Lianne, his es-tranged wife, memory-haunted, trying to reconcile two versions of the same shadowy man. And their small son Justin, standing at the window, scanning the sky for more planes. These are lives choreographed by loss, grief and the enormous force of history. Brave and brilliant, Falling Man traces the way the events of September 11 have reconfigured our emotional landscape, our memory and our perception of the world. It is cathartic, beautiful, heartbreaking.

DeLillo's novel about a survivor and his family attempting to process the horror of the 9/11 attacks. The surreal nature of the event lends itself well to Delillo's surrealist writing style, although I'm not sure it's among his best work.

Pickpick

9/11 is an event that everyone alive for it can tell you where they were when it happened. This story is about one of the survivor‘s, his estranged wife, and his young son and how they struggle to put their pieces back together....or don‘t...How, like a phoenix, they came out of the smoke and ash. The same creature, but also new. This is a book that gets under skin and it stays there. 143/1,001 #1001Books

#MayBookFlowers It's not an exact match but I thought it was an appropriate selection for #musicaltitles. This 9/11 novel was my first and only DeLillo. I bought Alicia Keys' debut album the Friday after 9/11. My boss had dismissed us early so I went to the Tower Records on South Street and bought this and Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits. 👇🏼

MicheleinPhilly I saw Alicia in concert at Radio City Music Hall in early 2002 and still love her to this day. I don't really remember much about the DeLillo but I will never forget images of the falling man. 😞 7y

They were character and authors both, able to tell what they wished, cradle the rest in silence.

"It was not a street anymore, but a world, a time and space of falling ash and near night.”

To the 2996 people who lost their lives on this day 15 years ago, I'll always remember.❤️

We rebuild what we lost, we make it stronger, bolder, and more proud. We the people. Strong. Brave. Free.??
