Pickpick

A good dive back into this series. It‘s interesting how much of this is still relevant.
I think Netflix did a pretty good job overall of bringing this to screen.

This was pretty weird. Now, don't get me wrong - I love a bit of weird, me. But this went on way too long & became a little incoherent. I loved the fairy tale parallels, but again, the metaphors & references got a little repetitive & lost some of their impact. It had things to say about mother/daughter relationships, society's beauty ideals, vanity/self-image, grief - all heavyweight issues - but drew vague conclusions.

Ruthiella I agree, it went on far too long for my taste as well. 2w

Pickpick

Even though not my favorite book by Nothomb, it's still a typical Amelie Nothomb book and therefore worth reading (for me). Once again she digs into the topic of beauty. Epiphane is heavily deformed and therefore called ugly. But he makes it work for him. But lives a beautiful soul in an ugly body? Or is he just as superficial as we all are? A perfidious little piece written by the master herself.

What a strange novel. Admittedly it took some pushing to get through the back half. So many ideas were present — grief, depression, complicated mother/daughter dynamics, the beauty industry. I‘m not sure it fully came together for me, but it certainly offered a lot to think about!

Mona Awad loves to play with truly weird ideas. I‘m not sure what‘s going on right now but it‘s both creeping me out and making me laugh. 🤷🏻‍♀️ ♥️

Billypar I loved this book and the Tom Cruise parts cracked me up! 😆 1mo
