pickJohn Safran is an Australian Gonzo journalist in the style of Jon Ronson, a conflicted questioner of the stranger part of our cultures. In this case he focusses on the rise of extremism in Australia by going and meeting with them; be they Islamic, Anti-Islamic, Jewish, White Supremacists, is left more conflicted and confused than when he started. Yet he also skilfully and humorously highlights the hypocrisy in their positions and actions.
I‘ve enjoyed John Safran‘s work through this whole career: from TV, to radio, to literature, and have been looking forward to starting this book for a while.
It‘s a lazy term but he‘s made a career out of “gonzo” journalism & clearly has an affinity with true crime as well as social issues.
Time to get stuck into a side of Australia few outsiders see.

I've watched his documentaries and I've see. interviews with this guy. But this is my first book by him. He is very funny and seems very genuine, honest and brave! Looking forward to trying this book

pickFinally home and jet lagged. Just finished this in record time for book club tonight. One advantage of my jet lag is that I get in a lot of reading when I should be asleep. This book gave me lots of food for thought. I really don't know JOHN Safran so I'm going to Google him . pickJohn Safran gets up close and personal with Australian extremists of all persuasions. It's kind of what he's known for. And they tell him stuff! Which he then uses against them.
He unearths contradictions and hypocrisy, whilst providing insights into the rise (and fall) of far right groups here.
And he does it all with his characteristic humour. There were so many LOL moments.
