The Last Good Kiss
The Last Good Kiss | James Crumley
10 posts | 12 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
One of the most influential crime novels ever written, by a legend of the genre. Tough, hard-boiled, and brilliantly suspenseful, The Last Good Kiss is an unforgettable detective story starring C. W. Sughrue, a Montana investigator who kills time by working at a topless bar. Hired to track down a derelict author, he ends up on the trail of a girl missing in Haight-Ashbury for a decade. The tense hunt becomes obsessive as Sughrue takes a haunting journey through the underbelly of America's sleaziest nightmares.

Saw this book on the Time's 100 best mystery & thriller books of all time & since I have had it on my Kindle for awhile decided to read it again. When it was first published it was recommended to me by a favorite mystery bookstore, The Rue Morgue in Boulder Colorado, & I loved it. When it came up as a Kindle book I purchased as I knew I would read it again one day, that day is here & loving it even more. Crumley's writing is top notch.

CatMS This book is truly one of the best mysteries of all time, and James Crumley is a master. I am going to look for the 2nd C.W. Sughrue book "The Mexican Tree Duck" as I enjoy Crumley's writing so much. 11mo

I do like a hard boiled detective and PI sughrue entirely fits that mould as he is hired to track a missing author prone to alcoholic binges, when he finds him in a dodgy bar he ends up looking for the landladies daughter. A gr8 rd which written in 1978 seems to be big brother to bosch, robicheaux + other mavericks - cdnt get any wild turkey so has to be a Guinness.

A real character-driven private eye tale, brutal and honest and without mercy.

Hard-boiled American fiction. A bit over the top, but supposed to be a classic in the mystery genre.

Well it's Friday tomorrow and ive got a cold so it's a glass of whisky and bed although i may have to read a bit more of The bone clocks before then. Here are two suitable books to sport a glass of the aforementioned drink, the tagged book is one i want to read soon and the other is one of my favourite police officers the grumpy jazz loving Resnick.

Lindy I've got a cold too—maybe I should try whisky. Hope we are both feeling better soon. 🤒🤒 7y
Cathythoughts I think I feel a cold coming too 😉. I hope you feel better, a weekend of reading & rest will help ( and a drop of the craythur) (edited) 7y

Well this book lived up to its reputation. Noir poetry of the first order. The only thing darker than the humor is the souls of the players in this cynical, tragic tale. Like any good noir, there's the world weary gumshoe, the tough guys, the professional drunks, the femme fatales, and the women laying ruined in their wake. If you haven't read this existential pulp yet get on it and let it ruin your day in the best kind of way.

Started off strong ... Funny...hard boiled ...but it fell into a silly and somewhat boring buddy road trip story and the mystery of the missing person case didn't hook me ....
