The Merchant's House
The Merchant's House: Number 1 in series | Kate Ellis
14 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
DS Wesley Peterson, newly arrived in the West Country town of Tradmouth, has his hands full when a child goes missing and a young woman is brutally murdered on a lonely cliff path. Then his old friend, archaeologist Neil Watson, unearths the skeletons of a strangled woman and a new born baby in the cellar of an ancient merchant's house nearby. As the investigation continues, Wesley begins to suspect that these deaths, centuries apart, may be linked by age-old motives of jealousy, a sexual obsession and desperate longing. And the pressure is on if he is going to prevent a further tragedy... Kate Ellis's wonderfully addictive series of West Country set crime novels feature Wesley Peterson, one of Devon's first black detectives.

#SeriesRead2021 @TheSpineView #BookSpinBingo #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks

This wonderful book was sent to me by @Crazeedi and I finally got around to reading it. Ellis has created a great cast of characters in this first book and the writing fit the mystery perfectly. Although this book doesn't have the dark twists I'm used to I still found myself thoroughly enjoying watching the mystery unfold, even if I had already figured it out early on.

TheSpineView Awesome! 👍 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!!! 3y
Crazeedi I think I have a couple more Wesley's to forward on to you!! 3y
Addison_Reads @Crazeedi more? You're too good to me. 💚 I'm hoping to read the others you sent soon. I'm curious to see how the characters develop. 3y
Crazeedi @Addison_Reads I think there are 2 more I've read! Love passing them on!! 3y

First book of the Wesley Peterson series. Wesley is the new Detective Sargent in South Devon. A body is found on his first day there and the investigation begins. Her face is crushed so identifying her is hard. At the same time a 2 year boy has gone missing and the search is on for him. Wesley's archeologist friend Matt is also in town, uncovering skeletons from the 1600s. How are these seemingly unrelated events linked? Read to find out!

EadieB @Crazeedi You‘re welcome! Great series! 4y

Just picked this up today. I've never read a book that had more than 3 or 4 books in the series. This series has 21 books in it! Looks like an exciting world to immerse myself in. I'm looking forward to getting started on it - after I clear out some of the 5 or 6 books that I'm already reading on, of course!

Thanks for your recent post on the series, Robert Greaves.

rwmg I hope you enjoy it 4y

#longdistancelearning #virtualfun#lunchbreak #readingtime

Today we had the students participate in an outdoors avenger hunt- we will come back together at 12:30 to share our finds. Finished first week today & it has been fun: making slime together, making songs up, choosing reading books, outdoor scavenger hunt, among other interactive activities. Lunch time is eat & read, which I am happily participating in.

Series peeps, has anyone read this one? Thoughts?

Tove_Reads Yes, it‘s been read on LibraryThing. Fast read, good mysteries. 5y
TrishB I have the first one on my kindle , but not started yet. Still trying not to start new series until I‘m up to date on some existing ones. She says 🤞🏻🤞🏻 5y
eanderson I haven‘t read the first yet, of course I have it on my Kindle! 🤦‍♀️ It sounds right up my alley. 5y

eanderson @TrishB 😀🙌 I don‘t feel so guilty now. I think I have at least ten books in series that I have yet to start. Not including the dozens of series I‘ve started! 5y
suzie.reads She is meant to be great but not read them yet 5y
TrishB @eanderson you can feel fine with 10! Mine is a lot, lot more..... 5y
Andrew65 @MicheleinPhilly I have been leading group discussions on these on Librarything over the past year. In fact we are due to do book 6 this week. I really like them, I like the lead character, other characters, setting and archaeological link to historical events. Good quick and engaging reads which are well written. @suzie.reads @TrishB @Tove_Reads @eanderson We Read one every few months. Would definitely recommend them. (edited) 5y
MicheleinPhilly @TrishB Gonna file this one away for later. My Sunday morning, had too much fun on Saturday night, no coffee, eyes thought all 23 books were being sold for 12.74. And they‘re not on super sale. 5y
TrishB 😂😂 good job you didn‘t press that buy button! I checked and I gave number 1 and number 23 🤷‍♀️ must have been #99p 5y
rwmg I really like them even if I tend to get Kate Ellis and Elly Griffiths muddled. 5y
MicheleinPhilly @rwmg That happens to me more with tv shows. We watch a LOT of Acorn and Britbox and some of the actors appear in what feels like every single crime show. So it turns into “Wait, he just killed someone??? I thought he was a DCI?” “No, that‘s on Show X.” So then I inevitably have to pause and look at IMDB for clarification. 5y
Suet624 Yeah, what‘s that all about? The same actors all the time. I get confused too. 5y

I enjoyed Ellis' Plantagenet series but this one does not disappoint. I'm looking forward to reading book 2. Highly recommend this book to those who love mystery thrillers.

Andrew65 A great review! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Thanks! 6y
TrishB Currently a 99p offer, thought I‘d see if anyone had recommended! I‘ll buy now 😁 5y

This is the schedule for a Group Read I am leading on Librarything, this is the first book in the Wesley Peterson Series by Kate Ellis. If anyone would like to read along on Litsy we can also discuss it here. #KateEllis #WesleyPetersonBuddyRead

rwmg Where on LT? 6y
Andrew65 @rwmg We usually set up a new group for each Group Read as works best that way. As soon as I set it up I will put the link here and tag you in. (edited) 6y

rwmg Thanks. It's a bit too soon to re-read it so I will probably just lurk unless a comment sparks something in my brain. 6y
Andrew65 @rwmg Have you read any others in the series? 6y
rwmg The first 4 plus the Xmas short story 6y
Andrew65 @rwmg I‘ve read, and enjoyed, all the books in The Joe Plantagenet Series, but The Wesley Peterson Series is new to me. 6y
rwmg I didn't know she had another series 6y
Andrew65 @rwmg There are only about five books in it, set in a fictional York,England and have a hint of the supernatural but key detective theme. I really enjoyed them. (edited) 6y
rwmg So many books so little time 6y
rwmg Googlebooks informs me a new Wesley Peterson has just come out 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Thanks for the schedule! 6y

When will we read this one? @Andrew65

Andrew65 4 copies at the library but only 1 copy reservable (the others are for housebound that you can‘t reserve) so likely to be end Jan/ early February before I can get it so I suggest we read it the first week in February. @EadieB 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 sounds good! I own a copy so when you get your copy let us know. @Tove_Reads 6y

Andrew65 @EadieB You‘ll be counting the days to a big change in your life and lifestyle. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I think it may eat into my reading time although he bought me a reading journal so I‘ll have to tell him that I need time to fill my journal. lol 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB I would imagine it will affect your reading time. You need to tell him he needs to work another 5 years. 😂 (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I‘m sure we will be traveling which I love also so can‘t complain and I‘ll work my magic and get him to read more so it will work out! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Travelling will most definitely be good! 6y

Excellent first-in-series. My only quibble is that the extracts from the journal didn't sound authentically Jacobean to me.
