It is 1953 and Pearlie, a dutiful housewife, finds herself living in the Sunset district of San Francisco, caring not only for her husband's fragile health but also for her son, who is afflicted with polio. Then, one Saturday morning, a stranger appears on her doorstep and everything changes. All the certainties by which Pearlie has lived are thrown into doubt as she struggles to understand the world around her, most especially her husband, Holland. The Story of a Marriage portrays three people trapped by the confines of their era, and the desperate measures they are prepared to take to escape it.

I'm struggling to find words to express my feelings about this quietly devastating novel. It's about love and how much we can know another no matter how much we love them, it's about the consequences of war for those who do not serve, it's about US society in the 1950's. It's left me with a lot to think about. #BookspinBingo

Yesterday I picked this up and did not stop until it was finished. The title suggests an intimate portrayal of a marriage, and it delivered. The twists were delightful + haunting; reminders that even in the happiest of marriages, ones we are proud of and work hard for, there are (or were) dark spells of doubt. We only know people when they are right in front of us, we see only the parts they show us and share with us. Everything else is imagined.
