Story of a Marriage
Story of a Marriage | Andrew Sean Greer
2 posts | 5 read | 18 to read
A Today Show Summer Reads PickA Washington Post Book of the Year"We think we know the ones we love." So Pearlie Cook begins her indirect, and devastating exploration of the mystery at the heart of every relationship--how we can ever truly know another person. It is 1953 and Pearlie, a dutiful young housewife, finds herself living in the Sunset District in San Francisco, caring not only for her husband's fragile health, but also for her son, who is afflicted with polio. Then, one Saturday morning, a stranger appears on her doorstep, and everything changes. Lyrical, and surprising, The Story of a Marriage is, in the words of Khaled Housseini, "a book about love, and it is a marvel to watch Greer probe the mysteries of love to such devastating effect."

Pickpick

I'm struggling to find words to express my feelings about this quietly devastating novel. It's about love and how much we can know another no matter how much we love them, it's about the consequences of war for those who do not serve, it's about US society in the 1950's. It's left me with a lot to think about. #BookspinBingo

Yesterday I picked this up and did not stop until it was finished. The title suggests an intimate portrayal of a marriage, and it delivered. The twists were delightful + haunting; reminders that even in the happiest of marriages, ones we are proud of and work hard for, there are (or were) dark spells of doubt. We only know people when they are right in front of us, we see only the parts they show us and share with us. Everything else is imagined.
