Kid Authors: True Tales of Childhood from Famous Writers | David Stabler
10 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
The series that includes Kid Presidents, Kid Artists, and Kid Athletes now chronicles the lives of Kid Authors! Here are true tales of famous writers, from long before they were famousor even old enough to drive. Did you know: Sam Clemens (aka Mark Twain) loved to skip school and make mischief, with his best friend Tom, of course! A young J. R. R. Tolkien was bitten by a huge tarantulaor as he called it, a spider as big as a dragon. Toddler Zora Neale Hurston took her first steps when a wild hog entered her house and started chasing her! The diverse and inclusive cast includes Roald Dahl, Beverly Cleary, J. K. Rowling, Langston Hughes, Jules Verne, Lewis Carroll, Stan Lee, and many more.

This morning @wanderinglynn asked that we encourage our kids to use their imagination. I said I rarely had to, and here is proof. For today in his agenda, below the first line about my son's reminder to follow the daily school routine, is a story about a boy and two girls playing hide and seek. I think. The writing is horrible and I can't quite make out the details. He does say at the bottom it was a marvelous adventure.

wanderinglynn 💜💜💜 that‘s marvelous! 6y
Slajaunie 💙💙 it is impossible to teach creativity. They are just born with it. (edited) 6y
tournevis @wanderinglynn @Slajaunie My son has that in spades! 😊 6y
Slajaunie My daughter does as well. I do not, however. 😧 6y

My kiddo started writing his own book! I wonder if I should sign him up for #NaNoWriMo with me this month... ? We may have to talk about copyright infringement, however--the title of his first chapter is "The Kid Who Lived"--I'm interested to see where this is going! #RaisingReadersandWriters #Storyteller

Kid Authors is a collection of short biographies on a wide array of authors. Each biography includes a few unique facts about the author's childhood, people who were important to the author and ways in which the author was connected to reading and writing. The passages were just enough to tease the reader and give a little background, but could leave the reader wanting more. (con't in comments)

Lmstraubie The one thing that stood out to me was the vast variety of authors included in the book making this a title that didn't focus on one particular age group. The authors ranged from J.R.R. Tolkien and Mark Twain to Jeff Kinney and Beverly Cleary. This wide range makes me hesitant to order this book for my K-4 library. At the end there were some random facts about authors that weren't included in the book. 7y
Lmstraubie Again the range of authors was a curious one. My elementary students will not be reading anything by Alice Walker or Virginia Woolf any time soon. It may have been helpful to have two versions of this book. One for elementary students and one for middle/high school students. 7y
ValerieAndBooks Good review and very interesting points. Whoever put this together may have forgotten that Walker and Woolf are more for mature readers! 7y
Lmstraubie @ValerieAndBooks Thank you. Yes, it was definitely an odd assortment. 7y
Daisey Good review. I've seen this title and have been wondering how appropriate it would be for my class library. This helps me better understand what it really includes. 7y
