Pickpick

(yes, I'm alive! And I have a new phone, with a functional screen!)

danah boyd writes in a very specific context - the 2000s - but while her subjects are on different social media than now (myspace and facebook) the patterns in which they interact are much the same. Essentially the thesis of this book is that much of teenage social media use is just teens being social in the only way they're allowed, as their free time is increasingly...

annamatopoetry monopolized and organized by their schools and families, and where the public is increasingly closed to them. Gen X hung out at the mall, millennials and Gen Z hang out online. It makes me feel bad for kids growing up in the US though, my impression is that Swedish teenagers are much freer to organize their own time without parental involvement. 3y

One of the main theses of the book is that while the platforms change, teens' behavior patterns on social media remain fairly unchanged. Most of the time I agree, but in this case the world really has changed; I don't think anyone could predict the carrd profiles, DNIs and extreme self disclosure of the last few years.

I'm enjoying this book much more than I thought I would, especially because anything about teens and technology ages so fast. Definitely recommend for anyone working with teens or trying to understand why they use social media the way they do.

I've been really stressed, worried & upset in the last 24 hours. Had a falling out with a family member, who I feel doesn't accept me for who I am & would rather I was more like her.
Thank goodness for books, as sometimes they feel like my only escape from reality especially with things are difficult

In 1995, psychiatrist Ivan Goldberg coined the term internet addiction disorder. He wrote a satirical essay about “people abandoning their family obligations to sit gazing into their computer monitor as they surfed the Internet.” Intending to parody society‘s obsession with pathologizing everyday behaviors, he inadvertently advanced the idea.
