This SF book can be used as a whole class RT, using the script from https://www.skippyjonjones.com/downloads/Skippyjon-ReadersTheater.pdf. This is a great book for EL students as well since Spanish is incorporated into the text; aligning with El strategy 24- incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in your curriculum. The incorporation on Spanish also aligns with UDL 2.4- promote understanding across languages.

Chaseb Absolutely love this series! I love your creative picture!! 4y
Mmurphy LOVE THAT PICTURE!! So cute!!!! 4y
ReaganT That book looks super interesting! The cute cat helps haha 4y
DrSpalding Your peers enjoyed your picture! Your kitty is quite special! This would be considered modern fantasy rather than science fiction. Remember to look back at your genre quick guide for help with how to classify your genres. You do not have any summary but do lead nicely into the idea of readers theater which would work quite well! 4y

Skippyjon Jones is back and his imagination gets him in more trouble than ever. The Siamese kitten who dreams of being a superhero chihuahua rides his imagination all the way to Mars for a super-spicy adventure. For extra fun, read this one out loud to a child you love.

3⭐️ I‘ve never been a big fan of Skippyjon Jones and this book is part of the reason why. I love the imagination, the hyperactive cat, and the illustrations. But the story always seems lacking to me. This is not lost in Space, it‘s lost in Spice because Mars is made of chili powder. I can not exactly explain my dislike, all I can say is I rarely finish a book because it feels like it drones on and never gets to the point.

Kar2b These books are sooo fun to read to your child with different accents though. My son just giggled through them all! 😊 6y
LibrarianRyan @Kar2b I know lots and lots of kids who love them. One of the ladies I used to work would do various accents and I loved it. I'm just not into these books. Maybe because I'm not a cat person? Who knows. 6y

SkippyJon Jones, Lost in Spice by Judy Schachner is a Science Fiction picture book that is perfect for 1-3 graders. This book is about a kitty that travels to mars. Skippy wants to go to mars because it is red, and red means that it is covered in spicy red peppers. Students will love this book for its witty wordplay and crazy illustrations. Because this picture book has some lengthy phrases, it would be great for partner reading, so students can

Ryanne.H Sound out unfamiliar words together. Working together promotes UDL 2.1 (Clarify vocabulary and symbols) because partners can go over words they are unsure of and can point out things they previously knew. This best EL for this book is EL 32 (use student pairs for team learning) by pairing up El students with more advanced EL‘s for clarification. 7y
LisaMart @Ryanne.H I know you‘re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but oh my goodness how cute! I am intrigued! Not only because of the cover; I also love a good wordplay! I‘ll definitely have to pick this one up and check it out! Great post! (edited) 7y
DrSpalding I‘m glad you were intrigued by this author and her fun books about a Siamese cat that thinks it‘s a Chihuahua. Add a web resource. Look specifically to her website. Students thoroughly enjoy these books as often times they include Spanish text as well. This book could be a book shared during a science lesson about our solar system. 7y
Ryanne.H Just Schachner‘s website for Skippy is so cute! http://www.skippyjonjones.com/index2.php I can see so many kids having fun with this. 7y

This character is one of my favorites! In this story Skippy Jon Jones, gets lost in spice, yes SPICE! He pours some red spice onto his bed and blasts off into space. The Skippy Jon books include spanish phrases so they would be perfect for a RT with ESOL learners. Here is a RT script that you could use with your students: http://www.skippyjonjones.com/downloads/Skippyjon-ReadersTheater.pdf.

kkidwell I adore the idea of using SkippyjonJones as a RT activity. I feel as if students would have so much fun, but also gain a better understand of Skippy through doing this. It is exciting that you were able to find a completed script specifically for a RT. (edited) 7y

Skippyjon Jones, Lost in Spice, is a fun SF book in the Skippyjon Jones series. This is a great book to use with students who are Spanish speakers as well and to teach some Spanish vocabulary. Here's an activity from RWT that includes outer space: http://www.readwritethink.org/parent-afterschool-resources/activities-projects/b... #ucflae3414su17
