Really powerful, but hard to review, especially in this condensed context. Kertész, a non-religious Jewish Hungarian, was a concentration camp survivor, entering the camps at age 14 (and lying about his age). This is a fictional parallel experience, deviant in that our narrator doesn‘t judge as we do, but takes things as they come, processing them in his own practical way. He‘s young enough that this is, in a way, his only reality.

dabbe @Graywacke I look forward to your final thoughts once you read it. I just thought the ending of the road/pier fit perfectly with the title. 1y

Graywacke @dabbe it does! @BarbaraBB me too ☺️ I think it‘s an important work. But also I read one or two really nice Club Read reviews, and that‘s what caught my interest. @BookwormM great to hear! 1y

Imre Kertész survived two concentration camps and tells his story in this book. He even narrated part of the audio book himself. The story is told in an amazingly neutral way, which is probably what‘s so striking about it. Might not be as „entertaining“ as other books, but that‘s not the aim of it I think. It‘s more of a report, and a very important one! 5/5?

sarahbarnes This has been on my shelf for a long time. I need to read it. 4y

Once again, I've had a panic about finishing my #LitsyAtoZ! Realistically, I'm not sure that I'll get X, Y & J done in time, but here's my #LetterF, with both English and German editions pictured. I've been studying it this semester for a Holocaust Literature class. As is perhaps expected, it is a difficult read, but in this case it's because the young narrator's naivety and cognitive dissonance are so confronting for the modern reader.

The same track in real life is one of the saddest tracks in the world. I don‘t think I will ever forget my visit to Birkenau.

Tove_Reads @Cinfhen indeed! 7y
Cinfhen How was your trip? 7y

Tove_Reads @Cinfhen It was fantastic! Poignant, educational, fun, good food... There‘s a nice bookstore in Krakow with a big selection of books in English. Auschwitz and Birkenau are definitely worth to see! The tour of the Jagiellonian university was brilliant! All the stuff Copernicus used, the oldest globe with America, and Chopin‘s piano 👍🏽 7y
Cinfhen Did u feel like u needed a "guide"?!? 7y
Tove_Reads The university is guided tour only. We decided to do a guided day trip to Auschwitz, Birkenau and the salt mine in one day to save time. 7y
