My bookspin list for September. Looking forward to seeing which random book is chosen... Still way behind on catching up this year but at least I get to read the books I've been putting off for so long.

Jewelle Gomez never says "empathy" when she means "compassion," and me and my cluster B personality disorder appreciate that so much.

batsy Have you read The Gilda Stories? 7y
Bertha_Mason Not yet, but I've read some of her uncollected short stories about Gilda in various spec fic anthologies. I love the character. 7y

The only quote I've posted from this book is a rather peurilely interpreted (on my part) one about Gomez's Catholic upbringing, but please don't think that that reflects on the quality of the book. I don't quote heavily from it because the jewel-like essays resist that sort of dissection, and because in a real sense it isn't FOR me as a white reader. Just read it. It's phenomenal.

100% consistent with my experience of being raised Catholic.
