We'll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night
We'll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night: A Novel | Joel Thomas Hynes
10 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
A blackly comic and heart-rending odyssey by the inimitable author of Down to the Dirt Scrappy tough guy and three-time loser Johnny Keough is going a little stir-crazy awaiting trial for an alleged assault charge involving his girlfriend, Madonna, and a teapot. Facing three to five years in a maximum-security prison, Johnny knows this might just be the end of the road. But when Madonna doesnt show up for court due to a fatal accident, shell-shocked Johnny seizes his unexpected clean slate as a sign from above and embarks on an epic hitchhiking journey across Canada to deliver her ashes to a fabled beach on the outskirts of Vancouver. Johnnys wanderings see him propelled in and out of the drivers seat of stolen cars, knocking heads with cagey cops, nearly decapitated by a moose, coming face-to-face with his incarcerated biological father in a Kingston jail, and finding surprising connections with strangers on the lonely road west. But most of all, he revisits the choices and mistakes of his pasthis relationships with his adoptive father and a cousin who meant the world to him, and his first real chance at love with the woman who is now lost to him. We'll All Be Burnt in Our Beds Some Night is the story of one mans kicking-and-screaming attempt to recuperate from a life of petty crime and shattered relationships, and somehow accept and maybe even like the new man emerging from within, the one he so desperately needs to become.

The description above, from the inside flap, pretty much sums up this bleak, violent and funny novel. The narrative voice is in a distinctly scrappy Newfoundland dialect. My heart went out to Johnny, a petty criminal on a cross-Canada mission. #CanadianAuthor
@shawnmooney and @LeahBergen : thanks for the buddy read!

There are many great examples of Newfoundland dialect and usage in this novel. My favourite is when the main character describes someone as the “toughest motherfucker ever tried on socks.”

Milkshake is about all I can handle these days. And no chewing going on in our John-John‘s immediate future, that‘s for sure. Thank Christ me teeth are bashed out cause all I gotta do is move my top lip outta the way and poke the straw in the gap where the teeth used to be. Life is good.

Cake for breakfast. Special treat after taking our turn to host the monthly literary salon last night. Leftovers are a bonus on top of gathering to share poetry among friends.

Lindy PS @ReadingEnvy I read a passage from Silk Poems and it was a hit. One of my friends borrowed it afterwards. 😊 6y
ReadingEnvy Awesome! Did you read the material about the overall project? Fascinating I thought. 6y
LeahBergen Cake for breakfast. 👌🏼 6y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy Yes, fascinating. I told my friend Kelly (who borrowed the book) a little about the background and encouraged him to look it up for himself. Kelly is a poet who often writes about humans interacting with our environment, ie 6y
Lindy @LeahBergen Carrot cake; I believe in vegetables for breakfast. 😉 6y

I‘m currently buddy reading this 2017 Governor General‘s Award winner with @shawnmooney , @Lindy , and three other readers I met at Shawn‘s wedding this summer.

Did I mention that he had us all seated at one table (“The Book Table”) for his reception? 😆 We chose this from the bargain section of a local bookstore when we all went bookstore hopping together the day after his wedding. 😍😍

He wants to know where Johnny is from & when Johnny tells him he roars laughing & thinks it‘s great & right away says how he heard a wicked Newfie joke & starts tellin it to Johnny. Johnny cuts him off though, wont let him tell the joke, but instead asks him if he heard the one about the fella who picked up a hitchhiker & got his face smashed in for tryna tell a Newfie joke.
Do you know that one? Stop me if youve heard it already.

DivineDiana Oh my! 😳 6y

Has anyone else read this one? I‘m having a really hard time getting into it.

TheKidUpstairs I know it's gotten all sorts of good press, but it holds vey little interest for me 🤔 7y
KraftDinner @TheKidUpstairs the plot actually sounded kind of interesting to me. I think it‘s the narrator‘s voice that I just can‘t get into. 7y

A major Canadian fiction prize will be awarded today. Here is a short Booktube video describing the five contenders. Hope my favorite wins (not this one)! https://youtu.be/8dD9bcpRmZM

Simona Again - I love your necklace❣️ 7y
PegStar @simona Thanks! I tried to make it Canadian...not sure if these are maples leaves tho! (edited) 7y
JacqMac Which one is your favourite? Maybe I should watch the video before I ask. Lol 7y

PegStar @JacqMac Yep, I made it very clear in the video which I like best....am waiting now to hear which won! 7y
JacqMac They all sound pretty interesting. It‘s shameful that I‘ve never read any of these. I‘m usually better with the Giller short list. Though sometimes I just read the winners. 7y
PegStar I had only heard of the Giller before this year (and not read many of them!) I just found out that the one pictured here won! Not my favorite but quite interesting @JacqMac (edited) 7y

As those disgustingly ugly stickers show, this is the only novel that made both CanLit prize shortlists. Now that I've read the synopsis I think I'd probably hate it but am a wee bit curious. I'd love to be proved wrong! No ebook versions available to me in Japan so far. Anybody have any gossip about this one?

Jokila I‘ve never heard of it but the titles awesome 👌 7y
PegStar Just heard that this one won.....NOT my fave! 7y
