This is a collection of nine essays in which the author discusses the more important works of authors I.Svevo, D.Lessing, J.Littell, Maxine Hong Kingston, A.S.Byatt, K.Ishiguro, G.Swift, F.McCourt and the Slovenian writer L.Kovačič. It is mainly in-depth analysis of novels, their settings, and at the same time she also discuss of importance / understanding of translated literature for, in this case, Slovenian readers. #NfNov

Red market is market/economy that trades with human tissue, body parts and even whole people ... The lack of regulation and non-transparency opens many possibilities for illegal trades and exploitation ... Quote from the book is the best description of that chilling investigation: “The ample supply of available organs in the third world and excruciatingly long waiting lists in the first world, make organ brokering a profitable occupation.” 5⭐️

I like Norse myths for various reasons, and one of them is their darkness, which in the Gaiman version fades a little bit ... but I love it anyway. This collection is primarily focused on mischievous Loki (my favorite god🤫) and his role in the destruction of Nine Worlds. Very enjoyable, especially audiobook 😉

Rosa is the daughter of a communist, activist in the anti-apartheid movement, and after his death she is confronted with his legacy. At the heart of this story is apartheid, but this is also the story about inner, intimate struggles. And that is exactly what makes this story masterful and complex. A very political story set in 70‘s, about white guilt, responsibility and where ideas and themes are presented through characterization. Powerful.

I didn‘t make it to the 24 hours, but I‘m pleased with my final result: I finished three books, two audiobooks (Red Market and Norse Mythology), one physical (Burger‘s Daughter), and I started the fourth ...but most important - I enjoyed in all of them.

Simona @Nute It is a simpler version of Zabaione/Zabaglione cream. For 4 persons you need: 4 eggs, 4 tbsp sugar and 4 dcl white wine (or less). Over the low heat mix together eggs and sugar, add slowly the wine and mix until foam is made. Just be careful not to boil the cream. You can also add a few drops of lemon juice, cinnamon ... or spices you like😘 1w

I finished all the books from the last #WeeklyForecast
My new pile: I already started The Familiars, I‘m few chapters in and so far I liked it. Today I will be finished The Red Market by Scott Carney. It‘s a very scary to think about what humans are capable to do for profit.
- Razgledi na tuje is collections of essays by Slovenian literal theory researcher A.Koron.
- Kiss the Ground.
- Comic, Curious and Quirky. (Last 4 books are for #nFnov )

Cinfhen I‘m intrigued by a bunch of your reads!! Going to do some research 1w

Svetlana was Stalin‘s beloved daughter, Kremlin princess, and this is biography of her unsettled life under the always present Stalin‘s shadow. Her life, marked with restlessness, abandonment and with some really bad decisions, is presented not only through author‘s narration, but also through her letters, passages from her book, newspapers articles, documents ... Well researched, interesting and readable.

1. Except books/bookish things? 😁I‘m grateful that this app is ad and (most of the time) drama free, that this app is dedicated to the readers and easy to use, and I enjoy seeing posts from all around the world from the people who can respect different opinions. 2. I don‘t like ‘hate reading‘ and memes ... but I don‘t see problem in that, I just scroll past those posts that I‘m not interested in. 3. When you search for ... 👇

Simona ... specific book, it would be nice to have the option to look at the reviews only. 4. I think that my average is twice a week. 5. Yes I do. I like seeing what others are reading/doing, and what makes them happy. 6. I don‘t have the answer. We are here because we love books, and we use different ways to express and share that passion in our posts. I‘m guilty of clicking ‘like‘ and I rarely leave comment in others posts. ljuliel Thanks for posting. Nothing wrong with only clicking like if that‘s all you are comfortable doing. batsy Yes to 3! Especially since we need to tag books for posts unrelated to books so a lot of it isn't about the book, sometimes. And I love your answer for 6. It's true that posting about books and liking and otherwise being quiet gives a lot of pleasure for introverts ❤️ 2w
Simona @batsy Especially for hyped books, to find reviews can be time consuming ... I work in a extremely extrovert environment, so at home I have to recharge and usually I simply can‘t be talkative 🤷‍♀️ 2w

Zlatko is Slovenian rapper and this book is his biography written in a collaboration with Slovenian poet/writer/translator Jurij Hudolin. Zlatko‘s personal history is interesting, but unfortunately language in the story is overwritten and for me just pretentious nonsense ... but on the bright side, book was short (140p) and from the library.
Because the actual book isn‘t in the database, the tagged book is Hudolin‘s novel Stepchild.

It took me a whole month to finished this story about sick young man and his contemplation about world, death, love, literature, history, society, time .... very philosophical, many ideas, written in lush, rich language, but for me it wasn‘t just too plotless (and I usually like plotless stories), but it was also very cold, soulless story.
I finished only first part, but I‘m totally counting it as finished prompt for #ReadAroundTheWorld #Germany

This is definitely my favorite fiction book by Adichie. Focus is on Nigerian family, their interpersonal relationship, their view on the world (which is deeply marked by Catholicism) and society‘s view on them, with the backdrop in turbulent times in Nigerian history. Atmospheric story, with many themes, in the core very brutal content, but written in matter of fact style, without preachiness and overly sentimental prose. #AuthorAMonth

Finally‼️Expectations are high ... I eagerly waited for my lunch break. 😁

BarbaraBB Have you finished this one yet? Did it make your shortlist? 2mo
Simona @barbarabb Yes, one week ago, but I didn‘t wrote the review, because I don‘t have nothing to say about this book. It‘s a compelling read in the YA dystopian manner, and with, in my opinion, very superficial, awkward/inorganic dialogues. I would say so-so, just because I was curious about the plot line, but I strongly doubt about the literary value of it ... 🤷‍♀️ Many words for ‘nothing to say‘ 😘 2mo
BarbaraBB That is interesting. You‘re the first to say do but I have been afraid it would be YA dystopian mostly. I‘ll pass for now! 2mo

In short story are the last lines, final execution, crucial for the success of it, and perfect example for this is story Lottery, but I have to say that majority of the stories in this collection aren‘t so effective and most of them have left me hungry, unsatisfied. Collection of very dark and atmospheric stories with interesting themes. I liked them, but I‘m not in love with them.⭐️⭐️⭐️
Few days late, but here is my contribution for #AuthorAmonth

Soubhiville I feel like this cover art is the most fitting I‘ve ever seen for this book. Also, pretty much everyone has expressed the same disappointment with the “other” stories. 2mo
Simona @Soubhiville I also like this cover in Slovenian edition, creepy cover for slightly creepy stories. Yes, I scrolled through reviews and I was quite pleased that I‘m not alone 😁 although I do think that thematically stories are very good and interesting, but unfortunately they are without the last, final punch. 2mo

Ducks, Newburyport | Lucy Ellmann

My shortlist for #BookerPrize2019 🤓

L.Ellmann - Ducks, Newburyport; B.Evaristo - Girl, Woman, Other; D.Levy - The Man Who Saw Everything; S.Rushdie - Quichotte; K.Barry - Night Boat to Tangier; V.Luiselli - Lost Children Archive

Kalalalatja I have only read Lost Children Archive of those six, and I wasn‘t the biggest fan, but I have high hopes for the others! 3mo
Simona @Kalalalatja I‘m not a fan either, but I ‘had to‘ make a choice between Lost Children Archive and An Orchestra of Minorities ... but I think (I hope) that it will be replaced with 3mo
8little_paws I *really* want to read ducks but I have sooooo many other books I should be reading..... 3mo
Simona @8little_paws It‘s surprisingly quick read, when you catch the rhythm and absolutely worth the time. 2mo

Saul, young historian, was hit by a car while crossing the famous Abbey Road, and from there on the reader is thrown into his self-obsessed thoughts, his relations with family, love and the world. It‘s difficult to say anything else about the content, because the narration and the structure is set up in quite twisty way and could be easily spoiled. Enigmatic story about inner and outer walls, beautiful language with some very vivid and ... 👇

Simona and emotional scenes, despite very unlikable main character. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #BookerPrize2019 3mo

Quichotte | Salman Rushdie

Pickpick

I‘m not Rushdie fan (his writing style is usually too complicated for me), but I quite liked this story (in the story) about modern society, seduced by opioids and fake news ... story is set in the Age Of Anything Can Happen and in this circumstances - Rushdie‘s imagination becomes unstoppable. Complicated structure, complex characters, intriguing story about love, family ties, gender, race, religion/spiritualism ... and spiced up with 👇

Simona ... surrealism/magical realism. Heavy with references and author‘s explanations, but still - surprisingly enjoyable read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #BookerPrize2019 3mo
Cinfhen Great review but sounds like a lot of work to read through 🤪I‘m gonna pass 3mo
Simona @Cinfhen It isn‘t easy breezy book, but on some level it is very satisfying read. I wouldn‘t read it, if it wasn‘t on Booker longlist, so I completely understand you 😘 3mo

Cinfhen When is the shortlist announced??? I‘m kind of rooting for 3mo
Simona @Cinfhen This Tuesday! My winner, without any doubt, is 3mo
Cinfhen I‘m totally terrified to tackle that one ☝️ 1000 + pages and no punctuation 😱 3mo
Simona @Cinfhen No punctuation is exaggeration ... The book have some proper, completed sentences, I think - eight 😘 3mo

Good, atmospheric, slow paced story about migrations and marriage falling apart. Usually stories like this, meditation on family relations, mixed with some broader topics works really well for me, but unfortunately, not in this case ... Good, but not for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #BookerPriza2019

Cathythoughts Interesting review 👍🏻... I must try & see what I think. Mixed reviews for this one 3mo
Kalalalatja I felt the same 🤷‍♀️ 3mo
arubabookwoman I just finished this, mostly skimming the last 100 or so pages. I couldn't stand the pretentious pseudo- intellectualism of "Ma." 3mo

I still have to read three books from the Booker longlist, but I‘m 💯% sure that this is the weakest book on this year‘s list. In my opinion this is just an average dystopian YA story. Some interesting thoughts/ideas about near future, but poor execution. #BookerPrize2019

While waiting for the missing daughter at a Spanish port, two aging friends - drug dealers contemplating about fortune/misfortune in life, and through passages from the past, reveling their common history. This is a slow, atmospheric, ‘plotless‘ story, written in a captivating, strong prose, and I think that the prose is the strongest point in this quite cruel, but still very emotional novel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #BookerPrize2019

Cathythoughts Great review! You are moving through the long list 👍🏻. This one sounds good. My son read it , I must ask him about it too. 3mo
Simona @Cathythoughts Thank you 😊. Since three books aren‘t published yet, I‘m done with the longlist till the end of August .... 3mo
BarbaraBB It‘s almost the end of August! And you‘re going real fast indeed! This will be my next one, great review! 3mo

charl08 Oh, I liked this one more than 3 stars, but tha k you for the review: and that's such a powerful quote. 3mo
rmaclean4 What do you predict will make the short list?? 3mo
Crazeedi Very interesting review 3mo
Simona @BarbaraBB Thank you 😊 It depends on how you look at things, for me - we are in the middle of month😘😘😘 3mo
Simona @charl08 I‘m very stingy with the ⭐️ 😘 3mo
Simona @rmaclean4 Three books are still unpublished, so it‘s a little bit harder to predict, but my guess for now is: Ducks, Newburyport; Girl, Woman, Other; An Orchestra of Minorities; Night Boat to Tangier; Quichotte and The Testaments. 3mo

Everything was good, gripping starting point, interesting story about Leila, about dynamic in her (later estranged) family, about her new family - 5 outcast friends, about she-city Istanbul with some glimpses into Turkish history ... till the last part of the story. I was so disappointed with the turn from solid drama to the some kind action/comic scenes. In the name of five friends I was feeling offended by the end. 🤷‍♀️ #BookerPrize2019

Cathythoughts Another interesting review 👍🏻 Another one I‘m not drawn to ... 3mo
Simona #ayupaugust Narrator in this story is a dead woman by the name #Tequila Leila who remembers her life while she is ‘waiting‘ for her brains to stop functioning. @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain 3mo
Simona @Cathythoughts I was quite intrigued by the premise of this book, but I was also a little bit hesitant about it, because I tried two books by Shafak before and I absolutely didn‘t like the prose. For me, her language was too sentimental and melodramatic, but not in this book. (edited) 3mo

squirrelbrain Good choice! I‘m also not sure about this one @Cathythoughts - I think I‘d try it if I could get it from the library, but probably not buy it... 3mo
Cinfhen Those #BookerBooks are so controversial 🙄I don‘t get how they make their determinations 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3mo
Simona @Cinfhen It isn‘t a bad book, but also it isn‘t ‘fiction at its finest‘. Definitely in the category borrow not buy ... 3mo

Frankissstein: A Love Story | Jeanette Winterson
post image
Mehso-so

I liked the general message of this book - the fear of changes and the questions/doubts about the future remains the same. 200 years ago or now, we still ask ourselves the same questions. I liked the part of the story about Mary Shelly, but I didn‘t liked the chapters from the present days. In these chapters are too many topics that remain just that - topics, there isn‘t any serious characterization, some parts are like reading ... 👇

Simona .... textbooks ... The story is fun, readable, but I think that doesn‘t represents Booker‘s motto “fiction at is finest”. #BookerPrize2019 3mo
Cathythoughts Interesting review! It‘s not one I‘m drawn too 3mo
Simona @Cathythoughts Not my cup of tea either, I read it just because it‘s on Booker longlist 🤷‍♀️ 3mo
batsy I love anything about Frankenstein and Mary Shelley, but after I read this one by Winterson and didn't like it, I'm wary of reading more 3mo
Simona @batsy I‘ll share with you some of my dirty secrets - Frankenstein is still in my TBR pile, and I‘m not interested in Winterson‘s work. Frankissstein was my first book by her ... 🤭🤫🤗 Your review of The Gap of Time is pretty hard and can also be transferred to the Frankissstein. 3mo

Pickpick

The key topics, race and gender, are told through 12 strong, complex, more or less connected women of different age, classes, heritage, race ... in a very interesting prose and structured composition. Despite its difficult topics, this novel brings warmth, humanity and great perspective on marginal groups in our society. Strong story, spiced with humor. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #BookerPrize2019

BarbaraBB Your favorite so far? 3mo
Simona @BarbaraBB Nope, so far my favorite is Ducks, Newburyport. An exhausting narrative, but worth the time 😘 3mo

From perspective of the writing technique this book is perfect. Interesting story, perfect blend of old/traditional beliefs with the modern world, dynamic structure, deep characterization, main themes runs smoothly through the narration ... but I didn‘t liked the narrator - chi, spiritual guide. His almost pleading undertones in his voice was too dramatic for me, although I think that the narrator, as a plot device, is a brilliant choice. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my pick for #Nonfiction2019 #SomethingWithPolitics If you are interested in Russian royal dynasty and if you are looking for something light from history field, than I recommend this book. It‘s quick and well informative book about the world of unbelievable power, but some parts were just on the too trashy side ...

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I can‘t imagine pushing all that history into 12 hours. That‘s an impressive audiobook! Good job! 3mo
ValerieAndBooks I‘ve read some of his other books, so I might like this one too 😂! 3mo
Simona It‘s still enough informative if you aren‘t familiar with the Russian court, but it‘s lacking in some deeper analysis of the history... just okay/readable overview. @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ValerieAndBooks (edited) 3mo
