An unwilling foray into necromancy makes Booth attractive to the creates who roam the darkness of the world. Ghouls, ghosts, and incubi single him out as one of their own in these ten stories.

#readyourway @TheSpineView - Didn't think i would get around to this one before Monday, but i didn't have a physical book and jumped into this ebook earlier than i expected to

Not my typical read, but dark, enjoyable, and seasonably appropriate

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a fun, spooky collection of stories about an archivist named Kyle Murchison Booth. The stories were very reminiscent of older horror short stories by H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe. These were great to read on a rainy day. This was my #bookspinbingo No. 25 pick and a fun #screamathon pick.

Kyle Murchison Booth is the COVID poster child since he avoids people, touch, and social situations. This collection of stories is so good. I don‘t know that the title story is my favorite, but it‘s interesting. The best one in the bunch for me is Drowning Palmer since it gives insight into Booth as a child and how he and others have grown up and changed.

If you love vintage horror stories but you wish they included queer folks and women with agency, you‘ve gotta read this. Monette offers up ten unsettling tales set in early- to mid-20th century America, linked by a common protagonist and a brand of menace that blends supernatural terrors with real world anxieties. I‘m so glad I reread it.

xicanti Also of note: THE BONE KEY is very much an American collection, but the tagged book covers similar territory from a British perspective. They‘re good read-alikes: 5y
esurient Yum, adding the Charles book to my TBR. You've read the Jordan Hawk books, yes? They're a bit too romance-y for my tastes, but I had so wanted the ability to shove Booth and Whyborne into a room together until they became friends. 5y
xicanti @esurient I haven‘t read Hawk yet, but it‘s only a matter of time. 5y

Lunch involved crumbed cod, cajun-spiced kale, and my daily short story.

I‘ve had an awesome time revisiting this collection. It‘s making me want to reread all her other stuff, stat.

This was my view while I read my daily short story. Looks like I‘m gonna hibernate this Thanksgiving weekend.

GrilledCheeseSamurai My roomates were supposed to leave town for Thanksgiving & I was so excited cuz I was gonna have the place to myself. Now...i dunno. Unless things change drastically looking like they'll be here. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 5y
Lreads It‘s too soon for snow! 😑 5y
xicanti @GrilledCheeseSamurai ugghhh. I can‘t blame them for not wanting to go on the highway, though. I don‘t even especially want to drive across town to my uncle‘s for turkey supper. 5y

xicanti @QuietlyLaura way too soon. The best winter I ever had was in Auckland, where it didn‘t snow at all and the temperature never dropped below 4°C. 5y
Lreads That does sound like a good winter! 5y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @xicanti Yup. Don't blame 'em at all. I don't think I'ma even bother driving downtown for work today. Just gonna take transit. Save myself the stress. Hope you are staying warm. ❤️ 5y
xicanti @QuietlyLaura everyone around me complained about how cold it was, and I told them I was happy anyways because I came from a place where it was so much worse. 5y

Really enjoying this collection of vignettes from the life of an accidental necromancer. The stories don‘t always wrap up nicely and the villains are not all punished. The MC is an archivist and it shows; the resolution of each story is about information rather than justice.

Two short fiction collections and one anthology I'd like to read (or reread, in THE BONE KEY's case) soon. Maybe during the Readathon? #30daysofreadathon
