Unlike most books that chronicle the history of Native peoples beginning with the arrival of Europeans in 1492, this book goes back to the Ice Age to give young readers a glimpse of what life was like pre-contact. The title, Turtle Island, refers to a Native myth that explains how North and Central America were formed on the back of a turtle. Based on archeological finds and scientific research, we now have a clearer picture of how the Indigenous people lived. Using that knowledge, the authors take the reader back as far as 14,000 years ago to imagine moments in time. A wide variety of topics are featured, from the animals that came and disappeared over time, to what people ate, how they expressed themselves through art, and how they adapted to their surroundings. The importance of story-telling among the Native peoples is always present to shed light on how they explained their world. The end of the book takes us to modern times when the story of the Native peoples is both tragic and hopeful.

This is a fun read. It‘s certainly geared toward kids, but it‘s also a valuable book for adults as well. I can‘t wait to read the next one now. People who believe the world is only 6,000 years old are not going to like this book. This presents, in vivid color and detail, the history of indigenous peoples in North America. It covers everything from the Bering Straight to present day. The final chapter is a wellspring of hope for the future. 👇🏻

This is cringeworthy. This before and after photo has me thinking “oh no no no.” You can tell in the eyes, the boy on the right has lost ALL of his innocence and identity. Those eyes are haunting.

I think the superior culture is quite clear in this story. The poor infant still nursing after its mother was murdered is just heartbreaking. The poor dear. I can‘t imagine what life ended up like for that kid.

Oldschool_millenial Every year when the calendar says "Columbus Day," my community college celebrates Indigenous Day with a huge event in which local tribes come to share and celebrate their cultures with food, music and dance, and also educate about their cultures and histories. 3y
GingerAntics @Oldschool_millenial I love everything about that. I observe it as Indigenous Day as well. I just can‘t bring myself to acknowledge the jerk. Somehow, for some people, it‘s okay to force convert people to Christianity, but if it‘s any other religion, they‘re up in arms. 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️ I will absolutely never say Columbus was a hero, and if I ever have kids, they will never learn that either. 3y
Oldschool_millenial Adam Conover of Adam Ruins Everything spent an entire season, called "History Reanimated," going through myths that we often learn as historical fact--or at least assume they're facts. One segment debunks the significance of Columbus entirely. (He also spends time on the actual, much darker story of Pocahontas) 3y

This! I think some people (a very few people) still understand this. I firmly believe that all children are born with this knowledge, but we educate it out of them. It‘s too bad, too. The more we prevent children, teens, and adults from expressing their creativity, the more violent and angry our society gets.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick During the early days of Covid lockdowns so many people were talking about how society needs doctors and grocery store clerks, but never actors/ musicians/artists. I tried to wonder how dreadfully dull life would be without books, music, movies, and pretty decorations in my home. 3y

I was really heartened by the discussion over the hard but important job teachers do and the least paid jobs in society being essential. I don‘t think people care about grocery store clerks or teachers anymore, sadly. Even more sad, no one ever cared about the actors, artists, authors, etc. 3y

Turtle Island is a brilliant and accessible history of the peoples of North America prior to colonisation. It uses archaeological fact, indigenous myth, and comprehensive imaginings to picture out what the past looked like here. It also touched on what was done to the indigenous peoples following colonisation. Suitable for MG, YA, and adult readers. Highly recommended.

This was a very interesting and, as far as I know, comprehensive introduction to the history of the indigenous people of North America. I learned a lot I didn't know before. It looks beautiful too. It was a little short, but that is to be expected from a book aimed at children. I think it's a great start to further reading. 4/5⭐️
