The Exact Nature of Our Wrongs
The Exact Nature of Our Wrongs: A Novel | Janet Peery
7 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
Janet Peery’s first novel, The River Beyond the World, was a National Book Award finalist in 1996. Acclaimed for her gorgeous writing and clear-eyed gaze into the hearts of people, Peery now returns with her second novel, The Exact Nature of Our Wrongs. On a summer evening in the blue-collar town of Amicus, Kansas, the Campbell family gathers for a birthday dinner for their ailing patriarch, retired judge Abel Campbell, prepared and hosted by their still-hale mother Hattie. But when Billy, the youngest sibling—with a history of addiction, grand ideas, and misdemeanors—passes out in his devil’s food cake, the family takes up the unfinished business of Billy’s sobriety. Billy’s wayward adventures have too long consumed their lives, in particular Hattie’s, who has enabled his transgressions while trying to save him from Abel’s disappointment. As the older children—Doro, Jesse, ClairBell, and Gideon—contend with their own troubles, they compete for the approval of the elderly parents they adore, but can’t quite forgive. With knowing humor and sure-handed storytelling, Janet Peery reveals a family at its best and worst, with old wounds and new, its fractures and feuds, and yet its unbreakable bonds.

Kind of strange POV, but realistic characters and all the trappings of small town Midwest life.
Over all, a read in line with THE CORRECTIONS-- heavy lyricism, heavy family drama, some surprisingly comic moments, but not for everyone.
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Mdargusch I hated the Corrections so I guess I will skip this one. 7y
rachelm @Mdargusch probably a safe bet. 7y

Getting my pre-school pedicure and reading an ARC. Not quite sure what I think of this one and halfway through.

Heideschrampf I'm sorry to ask, but I always wondered what ARC actually meant... 😬😅can you help? 7y
OwenBanner @Heideschrampf advanced reader copy . Authors give them out for reader feedback and early reviews. My question is where most Littens get their ARCs. 7y
Heideschrampf @OwenBanner thanks! That's probably the reason i didn't know either - neither margaret atwood nor neil gaiman are sending me theirs!! #mewants 7y

abbiereadsbooks @OwenBanner You can request ARCs via NetGalley and Edelweiss (both are websites and free, I believe?)! Some people who are well-known bloggers or who blog for well-known sites may also be sent ARCs as part of that from authors/agents/publishers trying to get early reviews or free press about their books! 7y
OwenBanner Ha ha, Yep, at that level, I don't think they worry too much about building buzz with free books. Then again, I could be wrong. If anybody knows where we can score some of that sweet sweet printed paper, give us a shout out. 7y
OwenBanner @abbiereadsbooks thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I will head over there today and see what they've got. 7y
abbiereadsbooks @OwenBanner No problem! Goodreads also often has free book giveaways you can enter which occasionally are ARCs. And if you follow major publishers and book blogs on social media, they often do giveaways too! 7y
rachelm @OwenBanner I use NetGalley! You're more likely to be approved for books if you blog alongside Litsy. Happy Hunting! 7y
OwenBanner You've got the hook up! 7y
