Victor Lavalle's Destroyer | 
so-soA futuristic take on the FRANKENSTEIN tale, full of interesting ideas and characters, but hamstrung by the trappings of the classic story. Every time the narrative focused on the superhuman zombie rampaging across the country, my interest level dropped. Like a boring version of the HULK, this monster is virtually indestructible and bent on killing everyone. No nuance there at all.
pickI haven't gotten to Lone Women yet, but I've loved everything I've read from LaValle. Destroyer follows a descendant of Victor Frankenstein who continues his work in the modern age, while the original monster's self isolation is ended and a violent rampage begins. Pack in some devastating social commentary with great art, and you've got a story that will stick with you for a while.
Took some time this morning to finish this one before heading home from our weekend in the Hudson Valley/Catskills. Wish I had one more day! I‘m on a LaValle run and loving every minute of it. Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday.
This story wasn‘t my speed. I was going to give a 3-star rating, but I‘m a sucker for NYC history, and this had it. Along with some serious science knowledge. The writing was really good — it very much transported me back to my home in the City. Really there was nothing inherently bad about the story, just not my speed.

pickLoved this graphic novel! I thought the play on Frankenstein‘s Monster was very clever. How do we define the monstrous? How have Black bodies been defined as monstrous and what has the impact of that social delusion been? The book presents those heavy ideas, but it‘s also just a good story!

At times it seemed a little rushed and to gloss over things--I expected more nuance for the original monster, but that never materialized. pickImagine my delight when I went searching Scribd to see if they had any more of Victor LaValle's books available, and I found he'd written a comic. Who knew?!! Yeah, probably everyone but me. All of the issues were available, so yay! Dr. Baker is a brilliant scientist and a modern-day descendent of Victor Frankenstein. It's a story about racism and a mother's grief. And it's really good.
pickLaValle‘s retelling of Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein is harrowing & horrifying, a powerful exploration of love & loss, revenge, sacrifice, & the depths to which these emotions can drive people in their darkest moments. In this story, a descendent of the Frankenstein family, Dr. Baker, loses her son in a police shooting & does the only thing she can think of & you can guess where that leads. Definitely a Frankenstein for today. A very good read.
