I loved Dona Flor's passionate and exquisite love triangle! There is magical realism and a delicious mix of samba rythms, carnivals, tasty dishes and Afro-Brazilian rituals for deities. Dona Flor loses her first love, her pain and mourning are excruciating, but she rediscovers love and remarries, although her first husband never really leaves her...

This sounds a lot like the tagged book 🤔

Izai.Amorim Fala português? 4y
Sace No 😔 I wish I did. Sometimes I can make out something written in Portuguese using what I know of Spanish. 4y

Bonus cover .Since @batsy posted an Avon cover of Gabriela ,Clove and Cinnamon thought I would post another Avon Amado. Both are on my TBR. #1980sCovers

arubabookwoman Amado was my introduction to Latin American literature with both Gabriela and Dona Flor in those exact Avon editions sometime around the late 70s early 80s. I still have Gabriela (and a couple of others by Amado), but Dona Flor got lost somewhere along the way. 5y
Leftcoastzen @arubabookwoman cool story! Readers can definitely tell their story through the books that they have read. Need to get to this #mountainTBR 5y
batsy Oh, that's a stunner 😍 Thanks for sharing. I've yet to read Gabriela but if I were to buy more of his books these are the editions I covet! 5y

I read this several years ago but it seemed appropriate to tag latin lit today.

Slow moving but beautiful magical words. The intertwining of food and a ghostly love triangle.

I fell in love.

My #Recommendsay and #augustofpages #bookphotochallenge entry is Brazilian author Jorge Amado. My favorite is Dona Flor - this book has everything: love, sex (with a ghost!), cooking school, music, drugs, gambling, Carnival (of course), voodoo - you name it, it's in there and larger than life. It's very well written and a lot of fun to read😊
