I Survived the American Revolution, 1776 (I Survived #15)
I Survived the American Revolution, 1776 (I Survived #15) | Lauren Tarshis
14 posts | 13 read
The battlefield was soaked in blood. Screams of injured soldiers rang through the air. Eleven-year-old Nathaniel Knox knelt behind a rock, his gun clutched in his shaking hands. Nate had been heading to New York City to find his father. But now he was trapped in a terrible gunfight between American and British troops. This Revolutionary War had started as a thrilling fight for freedom. The 13 American colonies were breaking apart from England, away from King George III. The colonies would band together to become a brand-new country: The United States of America! But King George was like a snake with America gripped in his fangs - and he didn't want to let go. So now it was war - brutal, bloody war. And America was being crushed by the mighty British army. Thousands of American troops were either dead or dying in filthy British prison ships. General George Washington's army was in tatters. All Nate wanted was to find his father...and to get out of here alive.

Great story to learn a little more about the American Revolution from the point of view for someone who was “there”

A quick historical fiction tale about an 11 yo boy that accidentally finds himself amid battle during the American revolution. Written in easy language for younger elementary kids to absorb easily & focuses on a lesser known battle from the war - The Battle of Brooklyn (aka The Battle of Long Island).

Bookwormjillk My son hated to read until we found this series 6y
SleepyDragon My son still enjoys this series even though they are below his reading level. He checks them out from the public library because they won't let him check them out of the school library any more. He also owns a couple of them. 6y

A Historical Fiction novel, this adventure would be great read within a LC, RA, AS, IR and PR. This book is about an orphan boy, Nate, who's dad died at sea. He was taken in by his uncle, Storch, who is a slave owner, and runs away after an accident with the slave boy, Theo, where Nate took the blame. He fled and became a camp helper, after he met his father friend. Nate lived through the battle of Brooklyn, and returned home after Storch died.

JordanL http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/looking-history-h... Throughout the story, especially towards the end, you hear a lot about Smallpox and is how the uncle died, which goes great with this Lesson Plan. This Lesson plan talks a lot about illnesses, which is a bit creative rather than talking about this historical aspect of The American Revolution. 7y
JordanL For a UDL, this talks heavily about history, so using 3.1 to supply students with background knowledge can help understanding of the events in the book. Also, #5 for ESOL can help students, as there are vocabulary words an ESOL student may not know, so providing translated vocabulary can help comprehension. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
Cruzdia1 I agree that #5 would be a great ESOL enhancement because you could also utilize visual aids to help EL students visualize a new vocabulary word! 7y

Ryanne.H I remember Dr. Spalding showing this book in class. That UDL is perfect for this book! 7y
DrSpalding Beautiful book. I think this can be used in a science lesson. Lovely images obviously having one the Caldecott. Good choice. 7y
Cruzdia1 Hi Jordan! I remember this book from class! Your bio about this book seems so interesting! I‘m definitely going to read this one for myself! 7y

It is a good book. As far as I have read it. You might like it. Btw the main character snuck on a boat going to New York.

Man Cub and I listened to this on the way to my parent‘s for Thanksgiving. It covers the Battle of Brooklyn. While the book is decently well researched I was incredibly bothered by the fact that there was nothing mentioned about the French assisting the Continental Army even in her after notes she glances over it. It was a short listen and a good book for kids. Something to get them interested in learning more.

#ucflae3414f17 I Survived the American Revolution by Lauren Tarshis is a thrilling tale of an 11 year old boy who gets caught up in the front lines of battle in search for his father. This HF story offers a detailed description of what it was like to experience the American revolution, firsthand. Great for classroom libraries grades 3-5, I would suggest Guided reading for 3rd grade and Independent reading/Lit circles for 4th and 5th grades.

Radams LaurenTarshis.com/teaching-resources has great ‘novel activities‘ for teachers to download for free! In correlation to these lessons I‘d use UDL 2.1 ‘clarify vocabulary and symbols‘ as well as UDL 2.2 ‘clarify syntax and structure‘ to enhance comprehension and fluency during GR. UDL 8.3 ‘foster collaboration and community‘ can be applied to LC. EL 5 ‘teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts‘ and EL 6 ‘continually monitor students‘ 7y
Radams Comprehension‘ can be applied to both GR and LC. 7y

This HF is about a young boy named Nate who runs away from his uncle's farm and ends up fighting in the American Revolution. The history provided in this book through the time line set up of each chapter would work nicely with a K-W-L chart and guided reading. I would suggest this boom for 5th-6th grade. www.scholastic.com #UCFWalterslit

Brittney3 @jhudson I️ remember reading this series of books in elementary back when I️ loved history! I️ was always so into them. I agree it would work well with a kwl chart. 7y

This HF book is about a young boy who after escaping his abusive uncle stumbles into an army camp in NYC. Since he is only 11, he is a ammunition runner. He goes to the battle of Brooklyn heights/Long Island. This battle is an epic failure but is a great learning experience for the American army. Since it is HF it could be a great tool to use for a fifth grade revolution resource. #ucflae3414f17

ashley.v It could be a RA or SR. http://www.laurentarshis.com/teaching-resources This website goes to the authors website where she provides different resources for the book. UDL principles used are 3.1, 2.1, and 6.3. ESOL principles are 4, 5, and 9. 7y
Madiwright97 Sounds like a great book for fifth grade, I‘ll definitely have to look into it! 7y
CourtneyR This book looks so good, I want to read it next. 7y
DrSpalding These HF and RF books are easy reads which make them simple to include in your curriculum. Expand on your UDL/EL. Using the author's site is wise! 7y

This is a historical fiction that follows Nate, an 11 year old boy who find himself in the middle of battle. What I enjoyed most about the book was after the story ended, Lauren Tarshis included some of her research and thought process for writing. It validates the book by giving students further resources. Scholastic has a lesson plan that teaches reading, writing, and language standards, also giving struggling readers a hero. #UCFWalterslit

CWalters #UCFWalterslit I appreciated that the link took me directly to the lesson plans and that they were based on Common Core Standards. 7y
ojavier1974 Thanks for the tip. I can use this book with my ESOL students. 7y
Erica.rivera I just got done reading one of the "I Survived" books and they're really interesting . It's amazing how much information about the topic is placed in the book. The cover itself is very eye catching for the students to just grab from the book library and prepare for a good read. Thanks for the lesson plans ! 7y
