A Historical Fiction novel, this adventure would be great read within a LC, RA, AS, IR and PR. This book is about an orphan boy, Nate, who's dad died at sea. He was taken in by his uncle, Storch, who is a slave owner, and runs away after an accident with the slave boy, Theo, where Nate took the blame. He fled and became a camp helper, after he met his father friend. Nate lived through the battle of Brooklyn, and returned home after Storch died.

Throughout the story, especially towards the end, you hear a lot about Smallpox and is how the uncle died, which goes great with this Lesson Plan. This Lesson plan talks a lot about illnesses, which is a bit creative rather than talking about this historical aspect of The American Revolution. 6y

JordanL For a UDL, this talks heavily about history, so using 3.1 to supply students with background knowledge can help understanding of the events in the book. Also, #5 for ESOL can help students, as there are vocabulary words an ESOL student may not know, so providing translated vocabulary can help comprehension. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

It is a good book. As far as I have read it. You might like it. Btw the main character snuck on a boat going to New York.

Man Cub and I listened to this on the way to my parent‘s for Thanksgiving. It covers the Battle of Brooklyn. While the book is decently well researched I was incredibly bothered by the fact that there was nothing mentioned about the French assisting the Continental Army even in her after notes she glances over it. It was a short listen and a good book for kids. Something to get them interested in learning more.

Great for classroom libraries grades 3-5, I would suggest Guided reading for 3rd grade and Independent reading/Lit circles for 4th and 5th grades.

In correlation to these lessons I‘d use UDL 2.1 ‘clarify vocabulary and symbols‘ as well as UDL 2.2 ‘clarify syntax and structure‘ to enhance comprehension and fluency during GR. UDL 8.3 ‘foster collaboration and community‘ can be applied to LC. EL 5 ‘teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts‘ and EL 6 ‘continually monitor students‘ 6y

This HF is about a young boy named Nate who runs away from his uncle's farm and ends up fighting in the American Revolution. The history provided in this book through the time line set up of each chapter would work nicely with a K-W-L chart and guided reading. This HF book is about a young boy who after escaping his abusive uncle stumbles into an army camp in NYC. Since he is only 11, he is a ammunition runner. He goes to the battle of Brooklyn heights/Long Island. This battle is an epic failure but is a great learning experience for the American army. Since it is HF it could be a great tool to use for a fifth grade revolution resource. #ucflae3414f17

This is a historical fiction that follows Nate, an 11 year old boy who find himself in the middle of battle. What I enjoyed most about the book was after the story ended, Lauren Tarshis included some of her research and thought process for writing. It validates the book by giving students further resources. Scholastic has a lesson plan that teaches reading, writing, and language standards, also giving struggling readers a hero. #UCFWalterslit

Erica.rivera I just got done reading one of the "I Survived" books and they're really interesting . It's amazing how much information about the topic is placed in the book. The cover itself is very eye catching for the students to just grab from the book library and prepare for a good read. Thanks for the lesson plans ! 6y
