The multi-award-winning author of The House of Shattered Wings continues her Dominion of the Fallen saga as Paris endures the aftermath of a devastating arcane war.... As the city rebuilds from the onslaught of sorcery that nearly destroyed it, the great Houses of Paris, ruled by Fallen angels, still contest one another for control over the capital. House Silverspires was once the most powerful, but just as it sought to rise again, an ancient evil brought it low. Phillippe, an immortal who escaped the carnage, has a singular goalto resurrect someone he lost. But the cost of such magic might be more than he can bear. In House Hawthorn, Madeleine the alchemist has had her addiction to angel essence savagely broken. Struggling to live on, she is forced on a perilous diplomatic mission to the underwater dragon kingdomand finds herself in the midst of intrigues that have already caused one previous emissary to mysteriously disappear.... As the Houses seek a peace more devastating than war, those caught between new fears and old hatreds must find strengthor fall prey to a magic that seeks to bind all to its will.

10/10 and my favorite book in The Dominion of the Fallen Series.
What could be better than power struggles between the Fallen Angel factions? An underwater Dragon Kingdom, that's what.
Focusing on a new Fallen faction, House Hawthorne, the story follows a couple characters from the first book, and a newly introduced Dragon Prince.

I really enjoyed this essay from Aliette de Bodard: https://uncannymagazine.com/fallacy-agency-power-community-erasure/

“We talk about agency a lot in writing: that attractive characters, suitable heroes, and role models are in control, or if they are not, this is because their character arc leads them to being in control—the conflict involved in being in charge of one‘s own destiny being the quintessential, most interesting one in fiction.“

effani I haven't read the tagged book - her latest - but I've recently become obsessed with her work, and she deals in a really interesting way with power and standard Western narrative structures. (edited) 4y

Don‘t expect to get very far into this before I fall asleep (I wish I didn‘t have to work tomorrow, but I don‘t think #readathon is a valid reason to call in sick, even at a library). Hoping I make it to at least 14 hours tonight! #24in48

I found this a bit difficult to get into but once I did, it became addictive. The prose is smooth and the progression of the story fascinating. An unexpected love story also blooms around the edges.

4☆.
