On a cold late Autumn Sunday in Southern Minnesota, a farmer bringing in his harvest is bludgeoned around the head by a young man wielding a bat. Leaving the unconscious farmer to drown in the grain bin, the young man calls the sheriff's office to report the 'accident'. Suspicious about the nature of the incident, Sheriff Lee Coakley quickly breaks the teenager down. But when she finds him hanging in his cell the next morning, she doubts it was remorse or guilt that led him to take his own life. In fact, she's not convinced it was suicide at all. Worried that she is up against a far more complicated case than she first thought, Coakley calls in Virgil Flowers. For an investigator with his expertise, it doesn't take long for Flowers to uncover a conspiracy that has bubbled away under the surface of this sleepy community for generations - and a series of crimes so monstrous that the small town can never be the same again.

Phew! Not exactly a 'fun' read, but certainly engrossing, with third act high octane shenanigans that would make Hollywood proud. I continue to love the character of Virgil Flowers and how he goes about solving mysteries and associated problems in this series, even if this book in particular dealt with REALLY rough subject matter. 1/?
⚠️ SA, statutory SA, incest, child abuse, spousal abuse, sex enslavement, grooming, cult indoctrination

Robotswithpersonality The writing really kept the pace taught, the bad guys and the good guys both meticulously plotting out how to achieve their desired outcomes, Flowers et al methodically working leads and getting at the truth. It's a higher quality suspense when you get moments of matching wits. All the more satisfying when good triumphs. 2/? 1y
Robotswithpersonality I appreciate how entries in this series always manage to have a low stakes running joke or two throughout the narrative, a breather from the tension.
If by any chance you find yourself in an urban, temperate area in mid-February, nostalgic for real, rural winter atmosphere, this will cure you of the rosy remembrance by detailing the snow and the cold. 3/?

Robotswithpersonality It glances the territory of moralizing/denigrating anything outside 'vanilla' sex, but mainly focuses on non-consensual/coerced acts where the character's and reader's abhorrence is shared. Might just be Midwestern values of the author muddying the waters between unconventional and perverse, but it's worth saying: polygamy, group sex, BDSM elements are not, in and of themselves, a wrongdoing, when safe, sane and between consenting adults. 4/4 1y

This was so dark you guys, but so so good. It may be my favorite “Effin” Flowers book yet. Trigger warnings for child sexual abuse though. It‘s not too detailed but it‘s there and stretches back years and years. I‘m ready for a Lucas book next, Buried Prey but I‘m taking a break and reading something lighter next. #24b4Monday 10.5 hours in. @Andrew65 @SumisBooks @jb72

Andrew65 Need to get to this series, but still way behind in Lucas. Great time, well done 👏👏👏 4y
CocoReads Someone clued me in to read them in tandem because they pop up in each other‘s books. I think the first Virgil book takes place between Invisible Prey and Phantom Prey so that‘s what I‘m doing this time around. But after I read Buried Prey, all the Lucas books will be new to me. 4y

My partial book list for this weekends #24b4Monday readathon. Not pictured: anything in my kindle which includes Emma by Jane Austen (for book group-it‘s not going well).

Andrew65 Wow a great and big stack @MrBook This will keep her out of mischief this weekend although not sure where sleep comes in. 🤣 4y
CocoReads Thanks @MrBook and @Andrew65 I won‘t get through half of it but I like lots of options! Also sleep is for the weak (which is me, because I love sleep!) 4y

Andrew65 @CocoReads 🤣 If you‘re like me I want to read so much at the weekend but after a normal week of work I‘m so tired Friday night and on Saturday which affects how much I can read. Like you I like a good range of books to choose from. (edited) 4y
CocoReads That‘s exactly it. I‘ll probably hit the bed fairly early tonight but I‘m also used to getting up really early so I‘ll probably we awake annoyingly early tomorrow. 4y
Andrew65 @CocoReads I‘m hoping to finish Night Prey this weekend. (edited) 4y
CocoReads Ooh, that‘s a good one! 4y
