Sodom Road Exit
Sodom Road Exit | Amber Dawn
17 posts | 4 read | 14 to read
It's the summer of 1990 and Crystal Beach has lost its beloved, long-running amusement park, leaving the lakeside village a virtual ghost town. It is back to this fallen community that Starla Mia Martin must return to live with her overbearing mother after dropping out of university and racking up significant debt. But an economic downturn, mother-daughter drama, and Generation X disillusionment soon prove to be to be the least of Starla's troubles. A mysterious and salacious force begins to dog her; inexplicable sounds in the night and indescribable sights spotted in the periphery. Soon enough, Starla must confront the unresolved traumas that haunt Crystal Beach. Sodom Road Exit might read like a conventional paranormal thriller, except that Starla is far from a conventional protagonist. Where others might feel fear, Starla feels lust and queer desire. When others might run, Starla draws the horror nearer. And in turn, she draws a host of capricious characters toward her--all of them challenged to seek answers beyond their own temporal realities. Sodom Road Exit, the second novel by Lambda Literary Award winner Amber Dawn, is a book that's alive with both desire and dread.

This book was so wacky and delightful. My favourite Amber Dawn by far! It's a book about returning home and facing trauma and challenges growing up. It's a lesbian love story. It's also a ghost story about a haunted amusement park (kind of)! It's like a queer Scooby Doo (not at all actually but what an image). Didn't want this one to end! #queerbooks

After she‘s gone, I go through the motions of a quiet night at home. I sit on the sofa, flipping TV channels. I open the refrigerator again and again. I read one poem from Quilting by Lucille Clifton. Clifton is brilliant. Her poetry saved my life, but right now, even poems are not a worthy distraction.

My favourite comic book characters are Maggie and Hopey. If only they‘d make out more. My sex life is down to reading comics, so here‘s hoping for some graphic action.

Set in an isolated small town. ✔️
Haunted closed amusement park.✔️
Body possession by restless spirit.✔️
BUT, it‘s not a typical horror/psychological thriller because:
-Characters have depth, demonstrating both good traits & bad.
-It‘s a lesbian ghost who possesses a lesbian who wants to be possessed.
-It‘s really about coming to terms with the fact that the past cannot be changed, and about separating wants from needs.

Men who said, “Are you sure you‘re only 13?” & “Pretty girls are supposed to smile” & “I‘ll teach you how to mow the lawn/drive a car/mix a drink/iron a shirt/tie a tie” & “Your future husband will thank me” & “It‘s just a joke, right, Barbara? Tell her it‘s just a joke.” And Barbara laughed along, always advising me to “Enjoy it while you can. There will come a day when you‘ll be insulted when men don‘t pay attention to you.”

Tamara and I take turns reading to each other from Geek Love. […] Tamara‘s voice is punctuated by little hiccups when she reads lines she likes. “The nature of lies is to please. Truth has no concern [little hiccup] for anyone‘s comfort.”

“I‘ve got my stay-home date suggestions ready. I rented The Color Purple and I‘ve Heard the Mermaids Singing from the video store.”

Yup. Sounds like a lesbian date in 1990. Thanks, Amber Dawn, for the flashback!

Nine Loomis Crescent is coated in at least 6 layers of Lunar Eclipse—a purple shade of paint that my mother chose for its name—and to set her home apart from the neighbouring cottages. The colour absolutely realized its full potential. Too brazen for the white panorama, the neighbours viewed the house as a painted lady, a tramp. The house may as well have taught itself to say, “Hey, sailor.”

Very cool blend of family drama, queer person returning to small hometown, and a good old fashioned haunting, all while making interesting changes to your usual expectations of those stories. Instead of being afraid of the ghost -- who is a queer woman like herself -- Starla is drawn to her, although she's equally drawn to Tamara, a flesh and blood lesbian who's the self-described "town stripper." Dark at times but also funny! #QueerBooks #CanLit

I somehow ended up with six books in my backpack today and I feel like they're pretty representative of how ecclectic my reading tastes are.
