Red | Jack Ketchum
10 posts | 13 read | 13 to read
When his beloved dog is senselessly shot and killed by three boys, the old man isn't about to let it pass. He wants justice, and he's going to make sure the kids pay for what they've done--even if it costs him his life. They picked the wrong old man to mess with. And as the fury and violence escalate, they're about to learn that--the hard way. Includes a bonus novella, "The Passenger." (August)

Not bad, and definitely fun to pass the time, but I found it a bit unbelievable. Without spoiling anything, the plot just seemed a little far fetched. But really, fun revenge story about a guy who's puppy gets killed (no that's not a spoiler! Haha). Especially fun if you've never read Ketchum!

Pickpick

I too picked this one up because I read The Girl Next Door by Ketchum . This one isn't disturbing but is sad because the dog dies, but the build up to the finale is pretty good. By the way don't mess with an old mans dog.

BookBoggart This synopsis gives me John Wick vibes. Lol 6y
Jamesmelvinmitchell @BookBoggart hadn‘t thought of that 😂. But John at 70! 6y
MStew Sounds good 6y
Jamesmelvinmitchell @meghan2714 just a simple revenge and retribution story. 👍🏻 6y

Two books, Red being the main, and The Passenger being the novella at the end. Red was okay. It felt a little phoned in. A made for TV book if you will. Not what people read Ketchum for. The Passenger is what people read Ketchum for. Short, violent and intriguing. Still suggest it as a quick read.

The second time he stopped he cried at last for the loss of him and for their long fine past together and pounded with his fist at the hardscrabble earth that had brought them here.

MaddestMax And I‘m crying at the gym. Doh! 6y

Not looking forward to this one. As a doggie daddy of three and an animal lover, I imagine this is going to be tough to get through.

Pickpick

Avery Ludlow is relaxing, just fishing with his dog, Red, at his side when 3 teenagers show up at the river wanting to rob him. Because he has no money they shoot and kill the dog instead. The rest of this book is his quest for justice. If you had not told me who wrote this, I would have guessed Cormac McCarthy, although the use of punctuation would have had me second guessing myself. The way Ketchum writes about a way of life that is fading 👇🏼

Reggie as society‘s values break down was sobering and heartbreaking. I‘m glad I read most of this during the dark, and also glad that when I finished it felt fitting that the sun was coming out. It was a great book. Then there was this novella Passenger that came with the book about a woman whose car breaks down and gets picked up by a woman who helps begin the woman‘s journey through hell. Good stuff. (edited) 7y

ReadingRover I think there is a movie based on this book. I tried watching it but it was like a darker than dark John Wick if I remember correctly. Or maybe just a bit gorier. I‘m not sure. It was forever ago. 7y
Reggie @ReadingRover I haven‘t watched John Wick or knew that this book was a movie. Was John Wick good? I don‘t think a movie could do this book justice. 7y
ReadingRover The movie this is based on is called Red too. John Wick was ok. Lol ya know typical monotone Keanu kicking some ass. Same idea as Red though only he was avenging the death of his girlfriend & puppy not just the dog. 7y
minkyb No dog killing for me. I can‘t. 7y
Reggie @minkyb it‘s soooo good, though!!!! 7y
minkyb Well, perhaps I can skip past it since I already know it happens🤪 7y

This paragraph seems so insignificant but it‘s perfect placement in this book, with it‘s dark foreshadowing, lets you know things are far, far, far from being over. I didn‘t think I‘d pick up another Ketchum because of The Girl Next Door, and not because it was bad, but because some things can not be unseen. This one is pretty good so far.

Bookzombie I think TGND was particularly difficult because it was based on a true story. It‘s a book I will never forget. I also read this one and remember liking it. 7y
Reggie @Bookzombie so, one time I went to a party where somebody ends up pulling a knife and threatens to kill someone. I secretly prayed to a god I don‘t believe in to not let me see someone get killed that night. And luckily no one got killed. But reading that book made me feel like I watched someone get killed and it was the worst feeling ever. That torture they put that girl through. This one though. It‘s a lighter read, and I like it. 7y
Bookzombie @Reggie I think you nailed the feelings about TGND. It made me feel dirty. Later, I watched the movie version and felt even worse. 7y
ReadingRover I heard TGND was pretty disturbing. I got it for one of my Halloween swap matches. 😬 7y
Reggie @ReadingRover Jack Ketchum is a great writer but TGND is BRU-TULLLL. I think there are a lot of takeaways and one is a part of your soul. Lol no, give it a try and let us know what you think about it. 7y
