Jack of Spades
Jack of Spades | Joyce Carol Oates
From one of the most highly regarded writers of her generation, JACK OF SPADES is a psychologically complex thriller that examines the fine line between genius and madness. Andrew J. Rush is a successful mystery writer with twenty-eight novels to his name. He has a loving wife, three grown children, and is well-known in his small New Jersey town for his charitable work. But Andrew J. Rush is hiding a dark secret. Under the pseudonym Jack of Spades, he has penned another string of novels - dark tales of murder, lust and madness. When a court order arrives accusing him of plagarism, Rush fears his secret may be exposed. And unbidden, in the back of his mind, the Jack of Spades starts plotting his survival.

Joyce Carol Oates is usually a pretty solid writer, but this book felt like she was trying to write about the horrors of plagiarism by lightly plagiarizing from both Stephen King's The Dark Half and Secret Window Secret Garden.

Did not enjoy this. Plot was flimsy. I feel like this was an ode to a type of literature or a joke with Stephen King that I'm just not getting, but I dunno. Didn't work for me for a lot of reasons and the one subplot that was interesting to me was just left hanging.

night_shift The thing that got me is that Jack is supposed to be Andrew's darker side, but Andrew himself is such a racist, sexist POS alcoholic that it never really felt like that. Jack was just murdery, but like benignly.. if that makes sense. Idk. But I wanna read The Dark Half now, so there's that. 4y
