The Tilted World
The Tilted World: A Novel | Tom Franklin, Beth Ann Fennelly
Set against the backdrop of the historic flooding of the Mississippi River, The Tilted World is an extraordinary tale of murder and moonshine, sandbagging and saboteurs, and a man and a woman who find unexpected love, from Tom Franklin, the acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter, and award-winning poet Beth Ann Fennelly The year is 1927. As rains swell the Mississippi, the mighty river threatens to burst its banks and engulf everything in its path, including federal revenue agent Ted Ingersoll and his partner, Ham Johnson. Arriving in the tiny hamlet of Hobnob, Mississippi, to investigate the disappearance of two fellow agents who'd been on the trail of a local bootlegger, they are astonished to find a baby boy abandoned in the middle of a crime scene. Ingersoll, an orphan raised by nuns, is determined to find the infant a home, and his search leads him to Dixie Clay Holliver. A strong woman married too young to a philandering charmer, Dixie Clay has lost a child to illness and is powerless to resist this second chance at motherhood. From the moment they meet, Ingersoll and Dixie Clay are drawn to each other. He has no idea that she's the best bootlegger in the county and may be connected to the agents' disappearance. And while he seems kind and gentle, Dixie Clay knows full well that he is an enemy who can never be trusted. When Ingersoll learns that a saboteur might be among them, planning a catastrophe along the river that would wreak havoc in Hobnob, he knows that he and Dixie Clay will face challenges and choices that they will be fortunate to survive. Written with extraordinary insight and tenderness, The Tilted World is that rarest of creations, a story of seemingly ordinary people who find hope and deliverance where they least expect itin each other.

The Mississippi Flood of 1927 affected an estimated 630,000 people, disproportionately displacing African-Americans with devastating effects. This book doesn't highlight that, but I found it a riveting story of a town's experience with the rising water amidst moonshining, possible murder, federal agents, orphaned baby, & female MC claiming her strength. Coincidentally, I just finished a lovely poetry collection with a similar title. Seems fitting.

lynneamch Previously posted #poetry collection under Taylor's earlier work as this newer one wasn't in the Litsy database yet. 3y

This was a pick, but not 5 stars. It could have used better editing. There were moments of beautiful prose, but also moments that dragged. Much of the last few chapters was unbelievable- as in, how could you hang on to a tree above a raging flood with a broken arm, two broken ribs, etc. But it made me interested in the history of the flood . Perhaps better read than audio.

My current audiobook is well written and a good story, but I'm not in love with the narrator. I may have to actually read this instead of #listen. #30daysofreadathon @DeweysReadathon

LeahBergen I have this book sitting on my TBR. 7y

Beth Ann and Tom signed this for me. Beth Ann signed it first and then a couple hours later Tom signed it during his signing time. You cannot read it, but Tom signed it: Tom Franklin who wrote about 15%. #msbookfestival #literarylawnparty

BookishBelle Hey! I was there today! 😊 7y

Mehso-so

My bulletin board at work. 🐢
Well, this could have been better. I wanted to like it more than I actually did. For some reason I wasn't that invested in the characters, but I like them from a distance. Lol, I can't really describe it. However the ending did pick up for me. So-so. Let's see what everyone else says on Monday for #bookclub 🤷🏼‍♀️

How can one resist a book with this in the description: "... tale of murder and moonshine, sandbagging and saboteurs, and a man and a woman who find unexpected love..." ?? I loved Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter and picked this book up.... really enjoyed it..... not an all time fav but a good read and different from a lot of books I've read. Looking for suggestions for similar books!

A quick read, a tale tied up with a neat bow. It was entertaining, but not as page turning as Crooked Letter.

This was a very enjoyable read. The story takes place around the time of prohibition and the great Mississippi flood of 1927. I adored the main character, Dixie Clay. This is a tale of bootleggers, moonshine, saboteurs, revenuers, and unexpected love.

BookBabe Oooh, sounds awesome! 🍸 8y

Page 55 and I'm struggling. It has all the elements- impending flood disaster, missing prohibition agents, orphan child ... but the period language makes for a clunky and slow read and I've started skipping pages.

[DELETED] 3558467437 Good luck 😬 8y
Suzy200 I made it to page 132 before giving up. It was just too heavy going with characters I didn't understand or care about. Disappointed. 8y
