Ironfire: A Novel of the Knights of Malta and the Last Battle of the Crusades | David W. Ball
7 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
On the small island of Malta, in the heart of the valuable sea lanes between the Ottoman Empire in the East and the Christian kingdoms of the West, the Knights of the Ancient Order of St. John prepare to make a desperate stand against forty thousand of the sultan's fiercest warriors, in a sweeping novel of sixteenth-century Europe.

Pickpick

I finally finished this behemoth. It was lent to me by a friend and it was good.. ish? I give it a 3.5/5. I loved the character building of Maria, independent Maltese peasant caught between her duty to her father and her desire to escape the island. I also loved the story of Nico, her Christian brother abducted, who ends up a respected Muslim commander in the Sultan‘s fleet. I only wish there was last battle and more character development.

I seem to be spending a lot of time in coffee shops lately. I‘m so grateful to have time to savour begin alone. 💛🌿

readherwriteher And what are you drinking? I don‘t drink Tim‘s coffee but my son loves their dark roast and my husband enjoys the regular roast. 6y
Jabberwocky @readherwriteher I either drink their apple cinnamon tea which I would have to buy large quantities of if ever I were to leave the country, or regular roast coffee with cream and sugar. 6y
kidamy @Jabberwocky If you were to leave, I'm sure some of us fellow Canadians would be happy to send care packages! 💕💕💕 6y

Happy happy. 😌

Laura317 Is Tim Horton a Canada thing? I keep seeing it in Louise Penny books. 6y
Jabberwocky @Laura317 Yes! 😅 It is a coffee and doughnut shop that was actually opened by a hockey player in the 60‘s. Think Starbucks but significantly less expensive and more pastries 6y
Clwojick @Laura317 Tims coffee is amazing, and I guess I should really should get around to finally reading some Louis Penny books. I‘ve heard good things, but now that I know she writes about Tims coffee I know I‘ll love her. Hahah ♥️ @Jabberwocky did you roll up and win a car? Lol 6y

Jabberwocky @Clwojick No, but I did win a 🍩 😍 6y
Laura317 @Jabberwocky @Clwojick I‘m fascinated with all things Canadian (Canadien?). Especially when I read about the Canadian Tire store, which sells way more than tires! 6y
drokka I liked the beginning of this book. I had to return it to the library before I got it done and haven't been able to get back to it. 6y
Jabberwocky @drokka It‘s really good, but also super long. It‘s vaguely reminiscent of the pillars of the earth series. 6y
Andrea4 @Laura317 😂 Canadian Tire also has it's own money...vaguely reminiscent of Monopoly money. 6y
Laura317 @Andrea4 Now THAT is crazy! (And kinda cool). 6y

You are 2 hours early to work. Do you:
A) Go in early and accomplish things?
Or
B) Sit and sip a fancy coffee and snack on some melon and read?

It‘s a real head scratcher 😅 #bookwormproblems

DivaDiane How do you get to work 2 hours early?!? 6y
Jabberwocky @DivaDiane My partner and I are sharing a car right now, so alas here I am 😆 6y
Kaye That melon looks so good. Reminds me of summertime. 6y

DivaDiane @Jabberwocky Ah... you made it sound a bit accidental! 😂 6y
Q84 Definitely read would be my choice! I've been there. Sharing a car can be a lot of extra reading time! 6y
ephemeralwaltz Easy choice!😂 6y
