A Long Way From Home
A Long Way From Home | Peter Carey
16 posts | 20 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Irene Bobs loves fast driving. Her husband is the best car salesman in rural south eastern Australia. Together with Willie, their lanky navigator, they embark upon the Redex Trial, a brutal race around the continent, over roads no car will ever quite survive. A Long Way from Home is Peter Carey's late style masterpiece; a thrilling high speed story that starts in one way, then takes you to another place altogether. Set in the 1950s in the embers of the British Empire, painting a picture of Queen and subject, black, white and those in-between, this brilliantly vivid novel illustrates how the possession of an ancient culture spirals through history - and the love made and hurt caused along the way.

The book, about the life-changing impact of entering the Redex Reliability Trials on a couple and their neighbour, gets off to a very slow start. The pace picks up once the Redex gets going, but slows down again when the three main characters are separated.

It‘s an interesting way of covering the terrible assimilation policies that saw Aboriginal children removed from their families, but it all felt a little incoherent.

This was my #DoubleSpin

My #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin selections for June. Animalia is an anthology which will be good to dip in and out of while I‘m visiting family next week.

The main characters in this novel are taking part in a brutal car race around Australia. I think they‘d need a good #SenseOfDirection for that.

This was really different from what i expected. I ended up loving it because the subject was so unfamiliar and i learned so much as one of the characters learned about themselves. Super interesting about car racing in the bush...who knew it could be so interesting?

This book had some interesting characters and plot lines, but it took too long to rev up. By then I had nearly abandoned the book. The car race was a clever plot device, however it seemed that it too conveniently tied into the aboriginal storyline, which honestly was the most interesting part of the book. There were at least three stories begging to be told and by competing for airtime, they were each shortchanged.

Carey is the master of the 250-300 page novel. This book sees a return to his mythical/historic Australia charging forward at breakneck speed. The feels like it unravels a bit, distilling his epic account of the Aboriginal plight and leaving the Redex road race characters to dangle in the disjointed winds of passing history.

What started out as a fast-paced romp about a couple entering the Redex Reliability Trial to help their car dealership in the first half devolved into a bit of a slog about the horrendous treatment of Australia‘s native population in the second half. It would have been ok if the two halves somehow met up at the end, but they really didn‘t. 3 stars for excellent writing, in spite of everything else. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars. Starts slow but stick with it. A brilliant book about identity, culture, racial hatred and discrimination.

#TBRtemptation post 5! This historical fiction story takes place in 1950s Australia. The Redex Trial is a brutal race around that continent over rough and rugged roads. Irene Bobs, lover of fast driving, her car salesman husband, and their radio-quiz champ navigator, Willie, take part in the high speed trials. You'll see the Melbourne of the era, learn Aboriginal history, and learn of the time's entertainment culture. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

What an interesting adventure. Set in Australia in the 1950‘s it follows three characters as they enter the Redex Trial, a brutal race around the continent and the adventures of a lifetime. Now to read some Peter Carey back stock.
