Cart And Cwidder
Cart And Cwidder | Diana Wynne Jones
7 posts | 15 read | 6 to read
Cart and Cwidder is the first in the best-selling Dalemark Quartet of books and tells the story of Moril and his brother and sister who are travelling musicians journeying through Dalemark, until one day they pick up a mysterious passenger. Somehow Moril's family and the stranger are becoming bound together in terror, flight, and music. - Diana Wynne Jones is recognized as being one of the most outstanding writers of fantasy in recent times. - The Dalemark Quartet books are for good readers who have enjoyed the Christopher Chant books by the same author. The books contain the same ability to immerse the reader with real child characters having magical adventures in an imaginary world. - This genre of fantasy writing is currently very popular due to the success of the recent 'Lord of the Rings' film. - Diana Wynne Jones has won the Guardian Award for fiction and has written over twenty novels in less than twenty years.

I‘m gonna take my recent Diana Wynne Jones cravings as a sign I should finally finish the Dalemark Quartet. I think I remember DROWNED AMMET and THE SPELLCOATS well enough to get by on, but all I remember of CART AND CWIDDER is:

• I read it last of the three. (This isn‘t a series where that matters.)

• It left me excited for the finale. (Obviously I didn‘t act on that.)

• A cwidder wasn‘t what I thought it was. (I think I imagined an animal.)

BkClubCare (…. What‘s a cwidder?….) 3y
xicanti @BkClubCare it‘s a stringed instrument that looks a lot like a lute. 3y
BkClubCare @xicanti - thanks 😊 3y

Cozy Sunday morning with kitty snuggles and a new book. This is supposed to be one of DWJ‘s more serious books, so we‘ll see if I like it!

This has to be one of my favorite of Jones's books. The characters and their plight in this novel (and it's series) really captured my interest and imagination. #magic #music #magicmusic #bard #cwidder #caravan

Currently on page 121.

It‘s starting to get really interesting and so far it‘s been very unpredictable. I never imagined a children‘s book to be dark and gloomy. My type of story!

#fantasy

I‘ve first heard of Diana Wynne Jones from the Studio Ghibli flick, “Howl‘s Moving Castle”. I was curious to read her other books, and I‘m happy to say it still holds the same magical feeling as I had with Howl‘s Moving Castle.

Any D.W. Jones fans out there?

BookmarkTavern Me! I love every book I‘ve ever read by her! One of my favorite‘s is (edited) 5y
vumblereads @chaoticgoodhufflepuff I‘ve heard about that book! I‘m adding it to my TBR. I don‘t know why she‘s not a mainstream author! I‘m liking her stories so far. 5y
BookmarkTavern I also highly recommend the entire Howl‘s Moving Castle trilogy! The Dark Lord of Derkholm is also fantastic. Oh and the Dalemark quartet! 5y

vumblereads @chaoticgoodhufflepuff from Neil Gaiman?! I love Neil Gaiman!!! Of course they‘re friends, they have to be! They‘re both good! 😍 thank you for the link!!!! 5y
xicanti Love her! She‘s so, so good at taking unsympathetic character types and making them into people I can root for. Plus, she never writes down to her young readers. 5y
vumblereads @xicanti I thought about that too. Of the level of difficulty the book is for young readers! I borrowed books 2,3&4 from Libby now. I can‘t wait to read the rest of the series! 5y

The cure for a long day dealing with fractious baby: a new-to-me Diana Wynne Jones. I love how she gives her characters full license to be irritable, unreasonable and just plain fed-up, and am surprised anew by how refreshingly unsentimental her novels are.
