Cart and Cwidder (Turtleback School & Library)
Cart and Cwidder (Turtleback School & Library) | Diana Wynne Jones
7 posts | 15 read | 6 to read
For centuries, Dalemark has been a land divided by the warring earldoms of the North and South. Now, with the help of the Undying, the mysterious gods of Dalemark, four extraordinary young people -- from the past, present, and future -- must join forces to reunify their beloved land. The first three volumes in Diana Wynne Jones's spellbinding quartet of novels about the mythical land of Dalemark were originally published in this country in the 1970s. They were reissued in 1994, and the fourth and final volume, The Crown of Dalemark, was published a year later. Now, HarperTrophy is delighted to make these books available again in beautiful new paperback editions for the growing audience of fans devoted to the work of Diana Wynne Jones. As U.S. News & World Report said, "Mad about Harry? Try Diana. The books of [this] British author are a Harry Potter fan's fondest wish come true: 31 works of children's fantasy set in worlds where the magic and the mundane mingle".

I‘m gonna take my recent Diana Wynne Jones cravings as a sign I should finally finish the Dalemark Quartet. I think I remember DROWNED AMMET and THE SPELLCOATS well enough to get by on, but all I remember of CART AND CWIDDER is:

• I read it last of the three. (This isn‘t a series where that matters.)

• It left me excited for the finale. (Obviously I didn‘t act on that.)

• A cwidder wasn‘t what I thought it was. (I think I imagined an animal.)

BkClubCare (…. What‘s a cwidder?….) 3y
xicanti @BkClubCare it‘s a stringed instrument that looks a lot like a lute. 3y
BkClubCare @xicanti - thanks 😊 3y

Cozy Sunday morning with kitty snuggles and a new book. This is supposed to be one of DWJ‘s more serious books, so we‘ll see if I like it!

This has to be one of my favorite of Jones's books. The characters and their plight in this novel (and it's series) really captured my interest and imagination. #magic #music #magicmusic #bard #cwidder #caravan

Currently on page 121.

It‘s starting to get really interesting and so far it‘s been very unpredictable. I never imagined a children‘s book to be dark and gloomy. My type of story!

#fantasy

I‘ve first heard of Diana Wynne Jones from the Studio Ghibli flick, “Howl‘s Moving Castle”. I was curious to read her other books, and I‘m happy to say it still holds the same magical feeling as I had with Howl‘s Moving Castle.

Any D.W. Jones fans out there?

BookmarkTavern Me! I love every book I‘ve ever read by her! One of my favorite‘s is (edited) 5y
vumblereads @chaoticgoodhufflepuff I‘ve heard about that book! I‘m adding it to my TBR. I don‘t know why she‘s not a mainstream author! I‘m liking her stories so far. 5y
BookmarkTavern I also highly recommend the entire Howl‘s Moving Castle trilogy! The Dark Lord of Derkholm is also fantastic. Oh and the Dalemark quartet! 5y

vumblereads @chaoticgoodhufflepuff from Neil Gaiman?! I love Neil Gaiman!!! Of course they‘re friends, they have to be! They‘re both good! 😍 thank you for the link!!!! 5y
xicanti Love her! She‘s so, so good at taking unsympathetic character types and making them into people I can root for. Plus, she never writes down to her young readers. 5y
vumblereads @xicanti I thought about that too. Of the level of difficulty the book is for young readers! I borrowed books 2,3&4 from Libby now. I can‘t wait to read the rest of the series! 5y

The cure for a long day dealing with fractious baby: a new-to-me Diana Wynne Jones. I love how she gives her characters full license to be irritable, unreasonable and just plain fed-up, and am surprised anew by how refreshingly unsentimental her novels are.
