Songs of the Humpback Whale
Songs of the Humpback Whale: A Novel | Jodi Picoult
14 posts | 60 read | 22 to read
Sometimes finding your own voice is a matter of listening to the heart.... Jodi Picoult's powerful novel portrays an emotionally charged marriage that changes course in one explosive moment....For years, Jane Jones has lived in the shadow of her husband, renowned San Diego oceanographer Oliver Jones. But during an escalating argument, Jane turns on him with an alarming volatility. In anger and fear, Jane leaves with their teenage daughter, Rebecca, for a cross-country odyssey charted by letters from her brother Joley, guiding them to his Massachusetts apple farm, where surprising self-discoveries await. Now Oliver, an expert at tracking humpback whales across vast oceans, will search for his wife across a continent -- and find a new way to see the world, his family, and himself: through her eyes.

I didn‘t find this as good as Picoult‘s other books, but the second half did pick up maybe because all timelines (except Rebecca‘s) were now moving forward. But also I liked reading the same thing happening from a different POV. I don‘t think I really liked any of the characters. I suppose that could mean that everyone had good and bad points. I agreed with the ending (but there are probably readers who wanted it to end the way I didn‘t!).

I love Jodi Picoults books so I decided to read her first book. It goes backwards through time and shows the thoughts of all of the main characters. Jane marries Oliver at a young age to get away from her father. This family is just messed up in every way. There are so many triggers in this. Ok, I almost stopped reading…lets just say, boy did her writing and topics improve!😏

This is my #bookspin for #bookspinbingo August and I quit at page 41. It bored me, I started looking up reviews to see if anyone else felt the same. The domestic abuse alluded to on the front page, that drives the story forward, was mild. Several relationships seem unhealthy. I'm just not interested enough to keep reading.

TBR since May 2nd. 2019, I saved myself from 307 tiny print pages.

wo.ai.ni Uh, so I'm kind of new here and I know nothing about #bookspinbingo. 😓😓 Can somebody help me out please?😅 4y
TheAromaofBooks Glad it's finally off the list!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Mimansha - Hey!! I'm the host for #BookSpinBingo!! If you go to my profile there is a link to a post that fully explains the challenge. In short, the original #BookSpin challenge is every month participants make a list of 20 books they've been meaning to read. On the 2nd of every month, I draw 2 numbers (BookSpin/DoubleSpin) & everyone tries to read those books. Bingo is an addition to that challenge for people who want to read more than 2 books⬇ 4y

TheAromaofBooks (cont') from their list. I draw out all the numbers & arrange them randomly on a bingo board & people read books that match those numbers to try & score a bingo!! Like I said, if you are interested, there are more details at this post https://www.litsy.com/web/post/1989556 & feel free to ask me if you have any questions!!! @Mimansha 4y
wo.ai.ni @TheAromaofBooks WOW that's so cool! I'm in! Just one more question, it doesn't matter if I'm a little late, right? Like, I'm kind of entering into the challenge mid-month, so would it be a problem? 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Mimansha - It doesn't matter to me at all!! Just make your list of books & tag me when you do. I'll tag you on the August bingo post & you can make your bingo card after you make your list!!! 4y

I have a bunch of Jodi Picoult books to read this year!

Clwojick I bought a huge stack of her book from the thrift store, and I still have like 8-10 to read 😅 6y
EastWind76 @Clwojick a couple of years ago my book club reas one of her books, and I loved it, so I've been collecting them anytime I see one at a used book store... so this is the year I actually read them! 😂 6y
Clwojick My favourites so far have been Handle with Care and The Perfect Match. (edited) 6y

I really wanted to like this book. However, I felt like the characters were too whiney. I did not like all the trauma that the 15 year old suffered through. The characters did not make me love or root for them. So I gave it a meh.

#readandeat for day 3 of #something forest
Just a quick simple breakfast before dog walking, then back home to finish up this book (less than 50 pages to go!) and dig into a new one!

My September TBR. I'm almost done with Songs of the Humpback Whale. Also plan to get in Under the Udala Trees by Chinelo Okparanta and Sold by Patricia McCormick on audio, and possibly more, but Flesh and Spirit is super thick so maybe not.
My goal this month is all female authors 😘 just because.

Notafraidofwords I enjoyed We Need New Names! 8y
