Writing Movies: The Practical Guide to Creating Stellar Screenplays | Gotham Writers Workshop
1 post | 2 read
To break into the screenwriting game, you need a screenplay that is not just good, but great. Superlative. Stellar. In Writing Movies you'll find everything you need to know to reach this level. And, like the very best teachers, Writing Movies is always practical, accessible, and entertaining. The book provides a comprehensive look at screenwriting, covering all the fundamentals (plot, character, scenes, dialogue, etc.) and such crucial-but seldom discussed-topics as description, voice, tone, and theme. These concepts are illustrated through analysis of five brilliant screenplays-Die Hard, Thelma & Louise, Tootsie, Sideways, and The Shawshank Redemption. Also included are writing assignments and step-by-step tasks that take writers from rough idea to polished screenplay. Written by Gotham Writers' Workshop expert instructors, Writing Movies offers the same winning style and clarity of presentation that have made a success of Gotham's previous book Writing Fiction, which is now in its 7th printing. Named the "best class for screenwriters" in New York City by MovieMaker Magazine, Gotham Writers' Workshop is America's leading private creative writing school, offering classes in Manhattan and on the Web at www.WritingClasses.com. The school's interactive online classes, selected as "Best of the Web" by Forbes, have attracted thousands of aspiring writers from across the United States and more than sixty countries.

I am so inspired by all the buddy reads here on Litsy that I am considering putting one together myself. Would anyone be interested in doing a #BookToScreen monthly read or a #ClassicBooks monthly read with me? Could set up a day a month to discuss the books similar to what @Tiffy_Reads does for hers? Grrrrr...hate that Litsy crops photos so much!

Jess7 I would participate when I had time if you did the book to screen movies 7y
Wife I may join you on some reads, so keep us posted. I take square photos and never have a cropping issue. 🌹 7y
underthebelljar I would be interested! These Litsy buddy reads are fun and I like getting a chance to discuss the books. 😊 7y

MinDea @Jess7 @Wife @BookishJess and @nstewart72 Any thoughts for a book for August with a #BookToScreen theme? There is a buddy read going on now for Into The Water so not that one, but completely open to ideas! 7y

MinDea @Wife Thanks for the square photo tip! Works great! 7y
Jess7 @MinDea this would be great one! It was just in theaters (stars Richard Gere) and the book is super good - suspenseful thriller or sorts - 7y
Jess7 @MinDea of the books I tagged above I've read and watched the movies for The Kite Runner, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, A Dog's Purpose, The Snowden Files, and And then there were none. I've read but not watched the movie for The Dinner. The rest are on my #TBR and #TBW Lists: Lion, The Shack, Before I fall and Fantastic Beasts (edited) 7y
MinDea Thanks @Jess7 !! Great ideas. Dinner is on my July #TBR list so could push it back, but want to pick a book everyone hasn't read (including you!!!) since it seems only a few people are interested! 7y
