My Cousin Rachel
My Cousin Rachel | Daphne Du Maurier
Orphaned at an early age, Philip Ashley is raised by his benevolent older cousin, Ambrose. Resolutely single, Ambrose delights in Philip as his heir, a man who will love his grand home as much as he does himself. But the cosy world the two construct is shattered when Ambrose sets off on a trip to Florence. There he falls in love and marries - and there he dies suddenly. Jealous of his marriage, racked by suspicion at the hints in Ambrose's letters, and grief-stricken by his death, Philip prepares to meet his cousin's widow with hatred in his heart. Despite himself, Philip is drawn to this beautiful, sophisticated, mysterious Rachel like a moth to the flame. And yet . . . might she have had a hand in Ambrose's death?

The tension builds slowly, Du Maurier only drops clues here and there, but I was drawn in from the start. Is the narrator reliable? Is Rachel manipulative and powerful or is she the real victim?

The movie is entertaining but has taken quite some liberties and fails to do what Du Maurier accomplished with her excellent writing and plot.

Finally finished this one. It took forever, not from lack of interest, just lack of time. It's my 2nd Du Maurier after Rebecca. She's a fantastic storyteller and a master at establishing atmosphere. Great book!

It was a little tough to get into, she writes sentences in full paragraphs. But once I got the hang of her style, I enjoyed this book. A mysterious and beautiful cousin causes a young man to be blinded by...love? Who knows.

I‘ve been meaning to read this for years and finally got around to it. It was well worth the wait as I was entranced by du Maurier‘s ability to write such a taut psychological thriller which could be open to different interpretations. Now I think it‘s time for a reread of “Rebecca” which I read many moons ago and loved as well.

lynneamch Same here. Had been meaning to read it for so long. Just finished the audio and loved it. After I finished, I had to go back and listen to the first chapter again. She was a masterful storyteller. 7mo
Ncostell @lynneamch I went back to reread the first chapter too! I can definitely see why this is a classic. 7mo

My November roundup! Only 8 books read; I‘m definitely not going to reach my goal this year. I underestimated how much time it took moving to a new house and putting all my books into storage. But I really enjoyed all 8 of them. Favorite was probably the tagged book or the Sayers. All fiction, two graphic, one short story collection, and 1874 pages read. 📚📚📚

8little_paws Yes, moving sucks. I read a lot of library and kindle books while my place was packed up and on the market. And a lot of audio 12mo

A book that keeps you questioning what really happened, even by the very last page. Philip Ashley‘s cousin Ambrose journeys to Italy and marries the mysterious Rachel. Then he dies under suspicious circumstances. Is Rachel a grieving widow or a cold blooded poisoner? Is Philip just a naive lovestruck young man or a controlling misogynist? Very eerie and atmospheric.

This is my first Du Maurier and over the past few days I have devoured it. It‘s so easy to read that you‘re 20 chapters in before you know it. Philip Ashley is infuriatingly pathetic and deserves everything he gets (personal opinion of course) and both main characters are equally unlikeable, but somehow this just adds to the charm. The ending is very abrupt and I don‘t feel quite satisfied, but I‘ll definitely add more Du Maurier to my #tbr pile.

I hope du Maurier meant for us to think Philip is a major douche because he really is a major douche. This isn‘t Rebecca-level but still engrossing & kept me hooked. As Philip does, you find yourself going back & forth b/t assessments of Rachel, your sense of what she‘s about & with whom. Very atmospheric, them being in the house so much gives it a spooky claustrophobic feeling too. Kinda wish we had the tale from Louise‘s perspective, LOL 4/5 ⭐️

Wow. Daphne du Maurier knew how to do suspense. Philip is a naive, petulant know it all, but in reality is so clueless. He's a classic Unreliable Narrator. Then there is Rachel. Poor sweet grieving widow or cold calculating murderer? Did she or didn't she?
