I really liked Chii's storytelling and art styles. It was interesting learning about her experience transitioning in Japan. I especially enjoyed reading about her coming out experiences with her boyfriend and family. I don't remember if it's changed recently, but I continue to find Japan's policy on forcing trans people to get lower surgery to legally transition abusive and reading about it in this book was troubling. #manga #Transgender #LGBTQ

A cute manga memoir of sorts detailing the life of the Japanese transgender author Chii. It is both autobiographical and educational as Chii spends time explaining LGBTQ+ activism and politics as well as discusses the nuances surrounding transitioning. This is a great addition to any LGBTQ+ manga collection.

A very lovely, charming comic created by a transgender woman living in Japan. This autobiographical look at this woman‘s life from childhood to marriage is a wonderful perspective to read. ❤️

This manga is simultaneously amazing and horrible to read. Half of me is like "life as a trans person somewhere other than the US or Canada!!! So thrilling!!" but the other half of me is like......Japan is still not good about queer rights. Really not good. You can't legally change your sex until 1) you've had sex reassignment surgery 2) you have been STERILIZED. This is forcible sterilization Japan makes trans folks go thru. More ⬇️

I‘m sure there are some people for whom this is true, but it‘s not so easy for me. I understand my own heart well enough, but when other people say, “You understand how a man AND a woman feels,” I want to tell them, “I don‘t know anything about either of them!” I think that it‘s really hard to understand how anyone feels.

I loved this mostly upbeat memoir of Chii's transition and love story. She's frank about the issues she's dealt with, but it's also clear she's happy with her life, her relationships, and her connection to herself. And the art is super cute.

Each chapter ends with a couple of pages devoted to the different ways people tackle trans issues in Japan and abroad, too. Chii's got her own approach, but she acknowledges it isn't the only possible way.

An adorable, autobiographical comic about one woman‘s gender transition and marriage in Japan. Chii briefly and sweetly talks about her experience growing up ‘as a boy‘, the difficult she faced in her transition, and the love she found along the way. It‘s a good primer for those uninformed about transgender issues. There‘s nothing objectionable in the book so it‘s appropriate for young teens as well as adults. 😊

Publisher‘s Weekly describes this as “equal parts Trans 101 and tear-jerking rom-com” and I cannot wait to read it 😍

I am very besotted with Seven Seas right now. The titles they take a risk with makes my heart feel so full.
Orange is a beautiful series that centres on friendship and love. The Girl From the Other Side is haunting and gorgeous, feeling like an old faerie tale. Captain Harlock is a classic manga title I‘m so happy to see in print. And the final two books are solid LGBTQ+ titles. ❤️❤️
