Running with Lions
Running with Lions | Julian Winters
13 posts | 16 read | 21 to read
Bloomington High School Lions' star goalie Sebastian Hughes should be excited about his senior year: His teammates are amazing, and he's got a coach who doesn't ask anyone to hide their sexuality. But when his estranged childhood-best-friend Emir Shah shows up at summer training camp, Sebastian realizes the team's success may end up in the hands of the one guy who hates him. Determined to reconnect with Emir for the sake of the Lions, he sets out to regain Emir's trust. But to Sebastian's surprise, sweaty days on the pitch, wandering the town's streets, and bonding on the weekends spark more than just friendship between them.

Up next! This will be my 15th book of the year 😱 I have never had such a fast start. I‘m hoping I keep going through the summer! Last year I just kept getting stuck in slumps. This year, I‘m definitely turning to reading as more of an escape, and prioritizing an hour to read before bed. I can tell it‘s been helping my stress and it‘s been such a relief.

Bailedbailed

I was excited excited going into this book, but I‘m bailing because the writing feels very juvenile and I agree with another reviewer that sounds like it came from AO3. The main premise seems to be “look at how LGBTQ friendly everyone is!” With little plot outside of that.

I APPRECIATE that this is a published book for teens—queer teens of all origins up in here! It feels very much like something that might be published on Ao3 with a teen rating. Complete with the somewhat off-ness in the writing that feels unedited (unbeta‘d even) and I‘m left with the impression that the author...isn‘t very smart, I don‘t know how wells to describe it. Still enjoyed it though—just probably not enough to leave kudos.

The cover blurb by Becky Albertalli bodes well for this LGBTQ YA novel about soccer camp.

Can‘t miss out on a #readathonpets opportunity! Here‘s Fatima who eventually cooperated long enough for a photo and then ran away immediately. Couldn‘t manage to get the book in there with her though! 😂 #readathon

Started my Dewey‘s Readathon off with this one. Not going to attempt a full 24 hours this year, but trying to get in what I can. Anyone else participating? #readathon

Caterina Yes! 🙋I'm also not going for 24 hours. Maybe 12?? Maybe less. Have fun! 😊 6y

That was SUPER ADORBS. A sweet, hilarious romance set at soccer camp, Sebastian & his diverse band of troublemakers are going to steal your heart & keep it forever. I loved the dynamic between Sebastian & Emir — it was wonderfully lively, while being warm & cute, and the side characters were just as wonderful as the main ones. The plot was adorable, though the conflict felt a bit confusing at times. A sweet, warm-hearted summer read. ★★★★☆.
