Rabbit & Robot | Andrew Smith
8 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
Told with Andrew Smiths signature dark humor, Rabbit & Robot tells the story of Cager Messer, a boy whos stranded on the Tennesseehis fathers lunar-cruise utopiawith insane robots. Cager has been transported to the Tennessee, a giant lunar-cruise ship orbiting the moon that his dad owns, by Billy and Rowan to help him shake his Woz addiction. Meanwhile, Earth, in the midst of thirty simultaneous wars, burns to ash beneath them. And as the robots on board become increasingly insane and cannibalistic, and the Earth becomes a toxic wasteland, the boys have to wonder if theyll be stranded alone in space forever. In his new novel, Andrew Smith, Printz Honor author of Grasshopper Jungle, will make you laugh, cry, and consider what it really means to be human.

Space cruises, liquid aliens, and robot cannibalism, Rabbit and Robot is a far-out-trip, post-apocalyptic novel in which A.I.s assume daily responsibilities and humans are cultivated to either fight in wars or code. The humans are constantly wasted and the robots often feel only one extreme emotion. The book is set over only a month of time and has self-acceptance and friendship as themes. The ending is abrupt and confusing. A fun, random read.

The rest of my BookOutlet haul from a few months ago. I finally put them in the library to make my husband happy.

Has anyone read any of these?

LibrarianRyan Nope, but I love the spine of Rabbit and Robot. 4y

I‘m overwhelmed again by our Stupid In Chief (just read the annotated transcript of his recent Washington Post interview). Some days I lose all hope for humanity. Politico EU reported that 1/3 of Europeans don‘t know about the Holocaust. 🤯

So I‘m seeking refuge in science fiction. Andrew Smith‘s Grasshopper Jungle was one of my favorite YA sci fi reads. I hope his dark humor can lift me out of this funk! Can Kurt Vonnegut resurrect and save us?

On one level this book is exactly as it purports to be—a story about 2 boys on a spaceship, along with some cannibalistic & very horny robots, orbiting an Earth experiencing innumerable simultaneous wars. On another level it‘s about social media, reality tv, our relationship with technology, AI, what our future might look like & how we are going to get there. It‘s no Grasshopper Jungle (my fav along w/Winger) but it‘s a very entertaining read.

BOOK MAIL!!! Which to read first!?! The tagged book about two boys stuck on a spaceship with insane, cannibalistic robots (sounds AMAZING, right?!?), Vengeful which continues the story of Victor Vale & Eli Ever (yes please!!!), A Winter‘s Promise which is a fantasy just now making its way stateside (& about time too!) & At the Edge of the Universe in which Tommy disappears & Ozzie is the only one who remembers him. I‘m going with the robots!🤖🤖🤖

I asked Andrew Smith how I could get an advance copy of his book. Here‘s what he responded. Unfortunately, I‘m not going to ALA this summer.

Are any of my lovely Litten friends going the the ALA Annual conference and would be willing to look for Andrew Smith‘s new book, Rabbit & Robot, for me? I would totally reimburse anyone for shipping if they can get it!

Because I was thinking about this book, here‘s a random reminder that it is out on September 25th. Can. Not. Wait. It‘s about a boy stuck on a spaceship with two friends and a bunch of insane, cannibalistic robots as the Earth is decimated by war. I‘m sure there‘s more to it but honestly, I don‘t need to know any more. It‘s by Andrew Smith so it‘s undoubtedly weird and wonderful and brilliant. Definitely looking forward to this one! ❤️🤖🚀❤️

catiewithac I loved Grasshopper Jungle! Can‘t wait to read this! 5y
