Providence | Anita Brookner

Kitty Maule longs to be "totally unreasonable, totally unfair, very demanding, and very beautiful." She is instead clever, reticent, self-possessed, and striking. For years. Kitty has been tactfully courting her colleague Maurice Bishop, a detached, elegant English professor. Now, running out of patience, Kitty's amorous pursuit takes her from rancorous academic committee rooms and lecture halls to French cathedrals and Parisian rooming houses, from sittings with her dress-making grandmother to seances with a grandmotherly psychic. Touching, funny, and stylistically breathtaking, Providence is a brightly polished gem of romantic comedy.

“They were married on his embarkation leave. Louise made her daughters wedding dress, sitting up all night to finish it. It was of the palest pink china silk; an audacious choice destined to set off her daughter‘s delicate white skin. Instead of a veil , there was a little pill-box hat. It was the most beautiful wedding dress Louise had ever made. “

Very happy to be reading Anita Brookner again ♥️

Pickpick

A lovely little bittersweet novel from Brookner - which I‘m pairing with a teeny village hall in the Bay of Islands.
If you already know you like Brookner you‘ll like this! If you‘re new to Brookner, its a slow unravelling of the life of Kitty - a quiet, elegant, intellectual, almost “out of time” woman in her late twenties. Kitty is an English literature lecturer; we see her analysis of a 19th c novel as well as her academic life. Quite lovely.

LeahBergen I loved this one! 👍 11mo
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 11mo
Reggie Ooooh, I can‘t. I tried Brookner once and it was a no. But I‘ve heard such wonderful things about her books. 11mo

CarolynM I read a few Brookner years ago. I appreciated her writing but I found her heroines incredibly frustrating @Reggie 11mo
Centique @CarolynM yes you would find this one frustrating too! I think if it was longer id get frustrated with Kitty, but theres something about being in a setting alongside Brookner‘s point of view that is quite addictive to me regardless of the characters. 11mo
Centique @Reggie I understand! Its just a flavour i like - quiet genteel desperation with a side of misogyny 😂😂 11mo

4⭐️ 2/24 With Brookner, I can feel the pain of the protagonist so vividly that I wonder what I‘d do if I were in the same situation. I am happy that Kitty Maule is established professionally; and I hope this character will find love one day. But really, Kitty, being single is not the end of the world. Just enjoy life and live life!
