On its initial publication in Czech in 1942, Saturnin was a best-seller. This is entirely appropriate, for while Saturnin draws on a tradition of Czech comedy and authors such as J. Haek, K. ?apek and K. Pol?ek, it was also clearly influenced by the English masters Jerome K. Jerome and P. G. Wodehouse. Saturnin is the story of a young man in love and his faithful servant Saturnin, who upsets the peaceful rhythm of his masters domestic arrangements and turns his life inside out. He lures him into an exotic world where he is forced to live dangerously, and shows him how to cope with any situation. Saturnin lays bare the weaknesses of others and compels them to disclose their true nature he is a subversive servant. Written at a time when Czechoslovakia was deep in the grip of the Nazi occupation, Saturnin showed that one form of resistance was to put the world created by invasion out of your mind and create another. However, so recognisably Czech was that other that its popularity did not diminish with the end of the war or, indeed, with the end of the forty years of communism that followed shortly after the wars end. The book has been adapted for radio and television, produced as a film and has a regular place in the repertoire of the Czech stage. A delicious dry humour and an imaginative flair that makes it much more than just the Czech Jeeves. Owing more to Jerome K. Jerome than to P. G. Wodehouse, the writing is rich in homespun wisdom and casual asides that take on a life of their own, leading the reader up charming byways of irrelevance A surprising number of belly-laughs for a novel that is more than half a century old. Saturnin is a classic Czech comedy from the 1940s that is delightfully easy to read has something to say and is genuinely funny at parts. It was great to re-read it, I'd still recommend it today if you want to try something different and relaxing.

Check out our discussion about it on e. 61 of the Mind Duck Books podcast: https://bit.ly/3vJn0Me

1. I don‘t read very many books in translation. The tagged is the last one I can remember for certain. I highly enjoyed it!

2. I used to read novels in Spanish, but over the last 15 years, I‘ve lost much of it. My French was never as good, and unlike wine, it hasn‘t improved with age either. Le sigh.

#two4tuesday Thanks for the tag @CarolynM ! I‘m curious what your answers would be @MaureenMc 😊

Pickpick

Having met him for myself, I found Saturnin wasn't a doppelgänger for Jeeves. Saturnin certainly didn't have the "perfect servant" veneer, but like Jeeves, he could somehow always right the world. Saturnin's methods were just slightly more devious, and often seemed to make the situation actually *worse* before we discover how well things turn out. I leave my host happy and much better off than when I met him. In fact, he was on his way to a date⬇️

mabell at the National Theatre as we speak! Meanwhile, I'm on my way to see the Spanish Riding School horses in Vienna. 🐴 #BackpackEurope #WhimsicalTour 6y

Well, I'm no longer lost! It turns out I was just reading the map upside down! 😆

Reading the map right side up, I found my way to my host's home, but upon arrival, I was informed that Saturnin had procured a houseboat as a new residence, so I would instead find the gentleman and his butler on the Vltava river.

On my way there, I stopped in the National Technical Museum (between the electrical and vehicular issues we face in this tale ... ⬇️

mabell ... thought I might pick up some useful knowledge.). While there, I saw the astronomical exhibit and learned more about the great work of Brahe and Kepler. Genius and mysterious! (Unfortunately, they did not have Tycho's nose to display.) Now on to the river! #BackpackEurope #WhimsicalTour 6y

I've been in the Czech Republic for a week, but I find I am completely lost in Prague! I was due at my host's home yesterday to meet his new valet, Saturnin, but I don't know where I am, and I don't know when I will figure out where I am! 😭😭

(Which is to say my book was due yesterday, and I've only just been able to start it, so my misadventure may get costly)

riversong153 Awwww...I hope you find your way!! 6y
mabell @riversong153 Thank you! It's been difficult to find the minutes for everything I need to do/want to do lately, and it's having a deleterious effect on my "traveling." ? 6y

I made it just in time to the airport, and I caught my flight to the picturesque Czech Republic. Whew!

My visit to the country, and to the gentleman's home where Saturnin serves as butler/valet, has promised to emulate PG Wodehouse and Jerome K Jerome. Needless to say, I am very excited! And a little nervous. 😂
