I love how Sharon Creech is able to write about deeper themes in a simple way for young readers. A sweet story about a boy who takes care of a newborn mini donkey that is expected to die.

I just was not expecting so much talk of death! And not just animal deaths; there is mention of the offscreen death of a baby that just pulled at my soul. The story of Winslow and Louie was sweet, but I wanted more with Nora. I just wanted more overall. I love Sharon Creech, but this is not one of my favorites of hers.

SAVING WINSLOW is a truly heart-warming story of a boy befriending a sick mini donkey. Louie is used to his father bringing home fatally ill animals from his uncle‘s farm. But when he father brings home a scrawny little donkey Louie is determined that Winslow (as Louie names him) will NOT die.

This is a beautifully written uplifting story of friendships and love. Perfect for ages 8-12.
