But when she fell in love with renowned conservationist Lawrence Anthony her life took an unexpected turn. Lawrence died in 2012 and Franoise was left to face the tough reality of running Thula Thula without him, even though she knew very little about conservation. She was short on money, poachers were threatening their rhinos, and one of their elephants was charging Land Rovers on game drives and terrifying guests. There was no time to mourn when Thula Thula's human and animal family were depending on her. How Franoise survived and Thula Thula thrived is beautifully described in this charming, funny and poignant book. Their elephant herd, rescued by Lawrence, shared Franoise's grief at his passing but over time forged a new relationship with her. One day a baby, Tom, became separated from the herd and found his way into Franoise's kitchen. Another day there was a desperate race against time to save a baby who had a snare wrapped round his face and couldn't open his mouth to suckle. Meanwhile Franoise fulfilled her dream of building a rescue centre for orphaned rhinos and other wildlife. Abandoned hippo baby Charlie, who hated water, joined the centre's rhinos and quickly became best friends with a little girl rhino called Makhosi. The traumatised babies had round the clock care, including an unlikely nursemaid in the form of a German Shepherd called Duma. If you loved Lawrence's The Elephant Whisperer, or just want to spend time with some very special animals, then you won't want to miss this sparkling book.

This is an emotional roller coaster; it‘s a follow up to The Elephant Whisperer. Lawrence Anthony‘s wife, Francoise, shares some stories of her life with him and how she carried on after his death. She loves her South African home and is passionate about animal conservation. She expanded their reserve by building a center for rhino orphans. For every heart warming story about her amazing animals, there‘s a heart wrenching story of evil poachers.

wanderinglynn We have poaching problems in the U.S.—American gingseng, which grows in Appalachia. It‘s causing the National Park Service & U.S. Fish & Wildlife all sorts of problems. 3y

This is a beautiful book and horrible too. It‘s the story of a game reserve in South Africa trying desperately to save wildlife while fighting the growing professional and well-funded poachers. It‘s an extraordinarily hard read in that regard, so huge trigger warning. But it‘s a love story to animals as well. I loved it so much while also cringing from the horror stories. Highly recommended if you‘re well-warned. #readingafrica2022 #SouthAfrica

wanderinglynn Yes, those that work on these reserves in South Africa & Kenya risk their lives daily. The last stat I saw was in 10 years, 1500 reserve workers had been killed trying to protect these animals. 😢 And an elephant is killed about every 15 minutes. 😡 3y

So this poison doesn‘t hurt the rhinos but makes their horns useless on the black market. They are also microchipped and the poison can be detected by airport security. How brilliant!

Malby-Anthony gives us a glimpse into the world of elephants, rhinos, and even a baby hippo. Parts of the story were heartbreaking (every instance with poachers made me so angry and teary), but overall this warmed my heart to read about the amazing people helping the animals and also the adorable animals themselves.

An amazing book I‘d recommend to everyone.

I have a real love for rhinos and was thrilled and devastated by events in this book. The conservationists and rangers on the front lines of the poaching epidemic are real heroes. The depth of the connection and respect between the animals and their caretakers is just beautiful. I will never understand how some people have such little regard for the animal kingdom.
