Sing to It | Amy Hempel
14 posts | 16 read | 13 to read
From award-winning author Amy Hempel, one of the most celebrated and original voices in American short fiction: a stellar new story collectionher first in over a decadeabout people finding meaning and connection in the idiosyncratic lives they lead. Amy Hempel has a stunning reputation as one of the most important voices of contemporary American short fiction. She is a multiple award winner, the recipient of broad acclaim, and her Collected Stories, which compiled her four previous collections, is widely considered essential reading among writers, students, and readers of great fiction. This new collection, her first in more than a decade, is a veritable publishing event. In these exquisitely honed and consistently surprising stories, where every sentence sings, Amy Hempel takes readers inside the surpassing trials of daily life. In A Full-Service Shelter, a volunteer at a dog shelter in Spanish Harlem works tirelessly and passionately to deliver care to dogs who are on a list to be euthanized the next morning. In Greed, a spurned wife investigates her husbands affair with a glamorous, older married woman. And in Cloudland, the longest story in the collection, a woman reckons with the choice she made as a teenager to give up her baby for adoption after discovering the true story of what went on in a maternity home nearby decades earlier. Woven throughout this collection are Hempels bracing truths and her ability to paint moments that are ordinary, devastating, and deeply human. Sing to It is a dazzling, unmissable collection from a quintessential American writer.

The last story in the collection, which was almost a novella on its own, was excellent. The others were good, but some were incredibly short. Flash fiction isn't really my thing. So, the writing is great, but not always to my taste.

This was my #bookspin for April. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 8mo
sarahbarnes People have recommended her stories to me and I‘ve still never read her. Maybe I‘ll give it a try one of these days. 8mo
lauraisntwilder @sarahbarnes She's pretty fantastic, really, even if I was lukewarm about this collection. 8mo
sarahbarnes Good to know - is there one you‘d recommend? 8mo

Amy Hempel has a talent for evoking so much in very few words. Her writing is very powerful and minimalist; I‘ve never read another author quite like Hempel and should be reading more of her work.

Beatlefan129 I saw this and had to do a double take— I have 2 greyhounds, one black and one white (with black ears)! 5y
shaynarae @Beatlefan129 Haha, that‘s perfect! I have such a soft spot for greyhounds. I don‘t have dogs myself, but my sister had a greyhound, and I absolutely adored him! 5y

Short stories, some very short. Some very weird. The last, perhaps my favorite. A good escape from the actual weird. 😀

vivastory My current read is a good escape from current weird 5y

I picked this up at a library sale somewhere, sometime, and now seems like a good time to read it. Short, well written stories that give me food for thought without overwhelming. And my sister may have studied with her at Bennington.

Come-read-with-me I really liked this collection. 👍🏻 5y
Lcsmcat @Come-read-with-me I am so far. And I will probably pass it along to my daughter who used to work for the Humane Society. 🐶 5y
Come-read-with-me That‘s a great idea. Bet she‘ll love it. 5y

This is the first time I‘ve stories by Hempel but it will not be my last. Her writing is raw and audacious, which is what makes this collection of stories so intriguing. She has a wicked wit and an unabashed ability to describe the best, and worst, parts of people. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Short stories featuring people who are sad—an animal shelter volunteer, someone missing their deceased dog, a woman who gave a baby up for adoption decades earlier. “Cloudland” is the standout, is half the book, and is one of only two stories not previously published. #shortstories

I think you are either a Hempel fan or you aren‘t. This is not the collection I would suggest for a neophyte (Reasons To Live or At The Gates of The Animal Kingdom are better places to start) but this one has some gems, too.

Overall a good collection of short stories.

Full Service Shelter was hard to read. Ode to all the hard work shelter volunteers put in and a warm hug to pit bulls and similar dogs who are hard to place, if policy even allows.

I love short stories! Some of the stories can be cryptic, but I enjoy a well written challenge.

“Full Service Shelter” is a must read for anyone who has worked in rescue or loves pit-bull type dogs. 💔🐾

In “Greed” a young wife spies on her husband being seduced by an older woman, a neighbour. 🍏🍏🍏
Read this book in a few hours and really liked it!

This was The Book I was most looking forward to this year, and I would gleefully read the writer‘s grocery lists. I pre-ordered the audiobook and periodically checked the internet until I found a book event near me (she was delightful). My opinion is more than a bit biased. Hempel‘s sentences stick with me for a long, long time, which is why I love her so much. I waited a years for her to publish a new book, and I was not disappointed.

I read Hempel's work for the first time about 20 years ago after seeing a recommendation from Chuck Palahniuk.
I'm not a huge fan of short stories but my confidence in Hempel is still solid after all these years!

My review is on Roots & Reads:

Thanks to Scribner and NetGalley for an ARC.

Amy Hempel's latest short story collection varies in topic and length. I adore super-short fiction and those pieces, so carefully honed, were my favorites of the collection. However, overall, I felt that the group lacked cohesion and I, personally, liked some, didn't like others. So, mixed bag. #netgalley
